When I was 16 I found a second hand copy of Armistead Maupin’s tales of the city in a book shop in Melbourne. Being so far back in the closet is was too scared to buy it. 3 years later and in the early stages of coming out, I tracked the book down at the local library and read it in a day. The characters have always held a special place in my heart, especially Michael (yes, bordering on narcissistic I know). Today I walked along the lane way in San Francisco that was the inspiration for Barbary Lane.
