Rudolph Valentino was a big celebrity in silent films. His 1921 movie, The Sheik, was such a hit that "sheik" became a slang term for a hot guy. Apparently, his 1924 beard had the potential to disrupt business for barbers and make "American citizens difficult to distinguish from Russians".
