Predator’s Gold by Philip Reeve is the second book in the Mortal Engines and oh my god, when I tell you guys it did not disappoint!
*+*~ No need to fret, spoilers are not ahead and I tried to make it generic as possible to make sure it remains that way.
I was hesitant to read this book if I’m honest with you guys. I remember struggling to get through the first one, found it a little more lackluster than what I had imagined it to be- especially, after pitting these own ideas about what the story would be about and what enemies might arise.
But, this book? I told myself to go in with empty thoughts. That whatever the story was, I’d be along for the ride.
I don’t know if it was because of that notion, or because the characters seem acutely older and wiser or what.
Regardless, the story progressed incredibly nicely. Overall, there was one common enemy for each storyline progression (the story divides up three interwoven storylines) with minor enemy characters packed between. And, I dare say I didn’t find any of the storylines boring in the least. I found myself looking forward to each chapter simply because they always ended on a note of interest.
Let me also add that I LOVE the addition of talk of culture for the traction cities. I’m unsure if I appreciated this bit for the first book but I found myself applauding it for the second book. It was so incredible and a nice touch of “otherworldliness” for children to read through.
I liked this book so much it has fortified my drive to finish out the series because HOLY CRAP, the ending? Shocking on so many levels. If you need something a little different and you’re okay reading a young reader’s novel- READ THIS.
