The Barrack Emperors part two: 244-253
7. Phillip the Arab (Feb 244-Sept/Oct 249) - Phillip's big break came when Timesitheus died, and he was elevated to Praetorian Prefect... and however Gordian III died, he was quickly elevated to the purple afterwards. He returned to Rome immediately after conducting a peace treaty with Shapur I of Persia, paying an indemnity of 500,000 gold denarii for the privilege. Philip managed to, during his rule, host the Secular Games, which coincided with what they believed to be the 1000 anniversay or Rome... and also stopped paying the bribes to tribes north of the Danube that kept them out of Roman territory. Whoops. Probably murdered by his own troops after a battle with Decius, probably along with his eleven year old son.
8. Pacantius (248) - Raised a rebellion in the Danube area against Phillip... but was murdered by his own troops before Decius, who was sent to put it down, even arrived.
9. Marcus Jotapianus (249) - Part of the near east's aristocracy, he raised a rebellion against Priscus, Phillip's brother who was overseeing the region... and again, was killed by his own troops (man, do you see a pattern here? I see a pattern).
10. Silbannacus (249? 253??) - known from only a few coins. Possible that he revolted against Phillip with the end of his rule under Decius... or that he was a claimant to the throne with his base in Rome against Valerian and Gallienus.
11. Decius (249 - 251) - a distinguished senator who was sent to put down Pacantius' revolt... when the troops forced (or possibly 'forced') him to assume the purple. He fought with and possibly killed Decius, and was then recognised as emperor by the Senate. Decius is infamous for one of the first official edicts against Christians in 250, demanding that all the inhabitants of the empire would sacrifice for it's good by a certain day, as well as the start of another round of the Antonine plague which butchered it's way through Rome's inhabitants. He was killed in the battle of Abrittus against the Goths.
12. Priscus (249?) - Declared himself emperor in the eastern provinces after his brother Phillip's death in alliance with the Goths. Died at the beginning of Gallus' reign?
13. Licinianus (250) - started an uprising against Decius while he was fighting the goths, but was quickly put down by Valerian.
14. Herennius Etruscus (251) - Decius' son and co-ruler. Was also killed in the battle of Abrittus.
15. Hostilian (251) - Herrennius' younger brother, who died of the Antonine plague shortly after taking office.
16. Gallus (251-253) - Was nominated emperor by the troops, and accepted Hostilian as his co-ruler to avoid (another) civil war, though Hostilian died of the Antonine plague fairly quickly (which may be somewhat suspicious). Murdered by his own troops.
17. Volusianus (251-3) - Volusianus' son. Also murdered by their own troops (when it comes to fewer emperors not murdered by their own troops...)
