The Barrens Is A Harsh Wasteland That Doesn’t Want You There, If Only You Could Leave.
Are you playing World of Warcraft? Any version but especially WoW Classic? Congratulations, you’ve already ended up in the Barrens before answering those questions. Both factions of players will somehow end up there at differing times, but Horde players know it best as a major leveling hub in all versions of the games, and despite some big changes to be found as time wore on, I always get the same basic vibe from The Barrens “Get out”.
The Barrens has an apt name given there’s really nothing there, it’s a vast grassland of plains with little more than animals, long dead animals and the occasional tree. It’s a land that feels like it’s existed forever, yet was somehow never alive to begin with. Most of all though it’s an absurdly harsh land, in Vanilla it’s made pretty clear that both of the Horde settlements have only recently been established. They consist of few buildings, all of which seem to have been constructed via tents and hasty wooden poles. The only bastion of normal civilization you can really find in The Barrens is Ratchet, and that's simply a port of transport to an even more savage area of Azeroth.
There’s an overwhelming sense that “civilized” life doesn’t belong in The Barrens, and that attempts to settle there further will only lead to further strife, but it doesn’t stop the people who have become determined to make it their home. Characters like Mankrik have no illusions of abandoning this place now, the Undercity apothecaries are still going to be fascinated by the oasis’ there that defy all logic and The Horde isn’t going to let up their claim on this harsh continent just because it wants it dead.
Oh also, game wise, the chat is a worse threat than any centaur or encroaching lion, it’s just not part of the lore.
