Barry Kay - Skate Interiors
On 3rd and 4th June, I filmed Barry Kay for the final interactive section for the film. Barry is the forth focus artist for the film. His work comprises of furnishings and home accessories made out of skateboards and skateboard parts. He uses new rather than recycled skateboards as his market is more high end. He uses all elements of the board including using base plates for hooks and rails and trucks for toilet-roll holders. His craftsmanship extends beyond skateboarding as he is a skilled professional upholsterer and also makes motor bikes and cars from scratch.
I met Barry on Saturday 3rd June, in his converted barn/workshop were we filmed his interview and he showed me some of his products. Barry also allowed me to film him cutting out a skateboard and welding which gave me a good range of B roll footage for the edit. I had an issue with the sound on this shoot and as a result the interview is quiet, I have tried to iron this out in the edit but the volume is still on the low side.
Barry hadn’t skated for 6 months when I interviewed him and I felt that this showed in his responses to my questions about how his craft and skateboarding linked. He seemed very unsure of his responses and also being a modest person, his interview came across slightly negative. Luckily we arranged a second shoot on Sunday 4th June.
Barry wasn’t keen on going for a skate on his own so he hooked up with fellow WeCanFly participant Mat Lloyd and we went to a skate-park in Stevenage. It was a sunny day and the park has an interesting back drop. The vibe was really positive. After I had filmed Barry skating a few tricks for the edit, I re- interviewed him. I was right in thinking that a Skate would reignite his understanding of how his creativity links with his skating. The interview I got at the park works well combined with the previous one.
In post production, I have used the welding shots and skating footage to create an interesting introduction coupled with the interview. I am please with this edit. Although the sound is an issue, I think this is more refined than my earlier edits and it is clear how I am developing a style and aesthetic as I progress through this project. Parts of the interview and this footage are also included in the linear film.
The next steps are to use this edit to promote the film and to work on the final film which I can now start to finish off as Barry was my last interviewee!
