I need to be converted to Basen x Lishu. I don't yet understand its teachings. What do the wise, learned people of the court see in this particular ship? I am a student eager to learn.

Bashu the Little Stranger (1989)
Widely considered one of the best Iranian films, Bashu the Little Stranger was released in 1989. Although it was released in 1989, the film was finished in 1986 but was heavily censored by the Iranian Government. Why the extreme censorship that caused three years of editing?
First, Bashu the Little Stranger is very unique because it includes culture other than the traditional Persian identity. Mainly, Bashu hails from Khuzestan, a traditionally more Arab and arrid providence of Iran. Hence, Bashu speaks Arabic. Once the Iran-Iraq War displaces Bashu to the Northern part of Iran, he encounters another unique culture of Iran.
Bashu landed in the Gilaki providence of Iran. This area is off the coast of the Caspian Sea and therefore lushious and filled with farm land. There are not only geographical differences but linguistic differences. In the Gilaki providence, the people speak Gilaki. This language is a Caspian Language that has been generally linked with poorly educated peasants. Therefore the only time the language was featured before in Iranian Cinema was as satire, mocking the Gilaki people.
Besides the introduction of non-traditional cultures, there was another big issue of the “female gaze” (pictured below) that also contributed to the three year delay. Actor Susan Taslimi, a Gilaki Iranian as well, pushed the boundaries of what was acceptable in post-Islamic Revolution Iran. Famously, Taslimi, playing Nai’i, gazes into the camera while beginning to veil herself. Of course this scene pushed what was acceptable for the censors in Iran.
Susan Taslimi, need I say more!
