Basics of Spell Casting

Define Your Desire Get specific! Journal about it, do shadow work, consult your tarot deck, etc. Dig into why these are your desires. What do you want out of this? How will it come about? How much resistance are you facing? Can you sustain this? Imagine how attaining this goal will work within your reality. Create Your Spell Research is key here. Now that you know your specific goal, figure out the best method to use; the best will be one that speaks to your specific purpose. Decide what correspondences you are going to use; entities, materials, colors, scents, herbs, stones, etc. How will you utilize each with a specific purpose within the greater framework of the spell? Find purpose for each unique element.  Plan  What moon cycle will you work within? Time of day? Day of the week? What will you wear? Do you require any music, substances, food, before, during or after your spell work? Figure out the specifics of your environment and the order you will do things in. Make sure to have all of your materials laid out and what you will need to attain a clear mind. I am back, (b)witches

It's been a veeery long time since I posted anything of my own here, and a long time too since I done any witchcraft at all. My routine with college, work and theater in 2019 made me really have to choose my priorities, and because of that I ended up putting witchcraft a little aside, and I really missed doing it.

So today I decided to make this sigil (I still got it!), which represents "I am reconnected with my magic", casted a circle and did a little ritual, and I feel so much better already! I can already visualize all the good energy my room had when I practiced magic regularly, and in small steps, I'm going to warm up again!

Remember, it's ok to stop put your magic aside for a bit if your life gets overwhelming (like mine did), but I advise not to forget it completely, because practicing it was really beneficial for me, as I think it is for you. 2019 was the best year of my life, and I strongly believe much of it was because of a witch jar I did on the beginning of the year.

Btw, we are over 4000 followers! I can't thank you enough! I'll try to be more active here, just can't guarantee I'll be making big posts all the time, because those take a time that I don't have. But I'll always be reblogging stuff.

Circle Creation Guide

First, as always, what is a circle? A circle is a method of protection that helps prevent entities from reaching the practitioner or those with him/her. It is also used to filter out negative energy and only allow positive energy in the workspace. There are numerous ways to cast a circle but for this article ill follow a more Wiccan Route. Even within the wiccan tradition there is more than one way to cast a circle so I would advise research into your tradition and make changes as necessary. When do you cast a circle? Many traditions cast circles for all or most of there ritual work. Some traditions Don't use circles at all. I generally recommend them whenever facing a strong negative force. which can be from summoning, banishment, or some other darker aspects of the craft such as curses. Where can a circle be placed? A circle can be placed basically anywhere. Some traditions have sizes for the diameter of the circle but for this method any size will do but I do recommend at least a couple feet for one person and for a small group 7-10 feet may be more appropriate. What Materials do you need. For this method you will need an athame or sword, something to represent each of the four elements for offerings water, fire, earth, and air. For water I usually use water in a small bowl, for fire ill use a lit candle usually, for air I use incense, and for earth ill use a stone. bring salt for the actual circle itself (if you desire to draw it out you do not actually have to). Starting the circle: Some people prefer to draw the circle out in salt or other materials. Do that first if you want. I usually only do so when I expect great confrontation. After you have a circle of salt and materials move everything you will need during your ritual inside the circle. If you can help it you don't want to leave a circle once cast. Now for the casting of the circle. Its important that only the one casting the circle stand inside it at this point. everyone else should be outside the bounds of the circle. once done put down an offering a each cordial direction. East is air, south is fire, west is water, north is earth. Early Blessing or prayer: At this point a prayer is said to the head deity that the person in charge follows. Usually it goes something like: Oh Great ---- Please come and grant this circle and all those within it your protection. Protect the ----- coven during this time. The prayer itself can change depending on tradition and belief and it is always best to write such things yourself to have more impact (unless your tradition has carefully worded prayers it uses). as I don't follow any deities I usually say an elemental prayer myself. Evoking Watchtowers, Guardians, and deities. Different traditions evoke different things at the 4 points of the circle. I would recommend looking into your specific belief to see what they follow. For this one ill invoke the watchtowers. After the initial prayer walk to the east. Say something like "Watchtower of the east, Guardian of air, I call you forth To watch over this circle and all those within". As your saying the prayer draw a pentagram into the air with your athame. At this point light the incense in offering. Head clockwise and repeat the prayer for each of the watchtowers changing the prayer slightly with each one. With this step coming to an end the circle is cast. Allowing others into the circle: In the method I use the person in charge of the circle moves to the east edge and uses his/her athame to cut open the circle at that point. now people can come in. As they do the person in charge asked them "how do you enter" Each responds in there own way and honestly. They the walk counter clockwise along the inside to the circle to sit or stand equally spaced out. When the last person is through reseal the circle. by pushing the energy together and visualizing a gap closing. If anyone needs to leave the circle cut open a door with your athame and close it once done. Closing a circle: When the ritual is done its time to close the circle. Starting east thank whatever you evoked and dismiss it. It may go something like Watchtower of the East, guardian of air, I thank and dismiss you at this time". Once done with all four watchtowers go to the center of the circle. Thank and dismiss whatever you evoked at the start. Now at this point the circle is gone. I usually take each of the offering and bury them though this isn't usually necessary. And there is how you cast a circle. let me know if you have any questions. Water Water represents emotions, purification, wisdom, the soul, the subconscious, eternal movement, emotional aspects of love, femininity, and absorption. In ritual, bowls of water, a cup or seashells are used to represent this element. The Circle of Protection

This is the most basic protection spell I know of. I’ve been using it since I was very young. It’s good to use for ward off negative energy, or to help you meditate. Always cast a circle of protection of some type before casting. ALWAYS. NOT NEGOTIABLE.

This circle spell in particular can also be a long range spell. Your sister is at college and getting harassed by a creepy guy? You can put up a protection spell and have it charged back.

The spell goes as follows:

Fill me with your light Divine. Fill me with the Light of the DIvine.

My circle of protection.

Only that which is in the light can enter. (repeat this part exactly 3 times)

My circle of protection.

Only that which is in the light can enter. (repeat 3 times again)

My circle of protection.

Around me, around this room, around this house.

My circle of protection.

Only that which is in the light can enter.

You can go into deeper meditation from here or go on to cast your spell.

The protection for others as well counts this same way and you just cater it to that person. If you want to include anyone else in your personal circle, recite their names either out loud or in your head. (I tend to keep it all in my head) and include them in the same spot you put yourself.

Now... Please, be careful with your intent with this part. This is ONLY for self defense or defending your loved ones.

You recite the circle as before and cast it... And this time add this:

“Anyone who tries to do harm unto me, it shall go back to them times three, times three, times three.” Repeat this three times.

Sometimes you increase it depending on the type of threat. This is to NOT harm someone intentionally, this is to protect you or your loved ones from anyone who tries to do you harm, be it mental, psychic, or psychical. It will come back to them before it can even happen to you. The number however needs to stay in 3′s...Even if it’s 300 or 600.

You will be throwing THE PERSON’S bad intent back in their faces. NOT because you want to curse someone.

This is for defense. The basic circle is for protection, good sleep, basic meditation and casting. The second part is purely for self defense or defense of someone you care for or who needs help.

THE NEWBIE WITCH - WHAT OTHERS OFTEN DON’T TELL YOU ABOUT BEGINNING THE PRACTICE

You will find lots of articles on tumblr for newbie witches but I realized when I started practicing that a lot of things were missing and I was kind of ashamed to ask because I felt stupid.

This post is for people who have just started practicing or are planning to. If you have already been into witchcraft for years this could be a little reminder for you.

You don’t need to be wiccan. You don’t need deities in your craft. When I started I was a little puzzled: everyone was talking about prayers, faith and other religious things essential in the craft. It seemed everyone was wiccan! Or Pagan. But they were talking about things I didn’t believe in. They were questioning my religious beliefs and my will to practice witchcraft. Then I found out about the existence of secular witches i.e. witches who do not include religion in their craft. Religion is not essential in witchcraft. You can use your own power, you can ask mother earth to land you some. It’s perfectly fine.

Get info BEFORE you seriously practice. This is a point lots of people skip and underrate. When I discovered magic was real I was enthusiastic. I wanted to start as soon as possible and I was upset my exams didn’t allow me to. Now I’m glad I waited. While I was studying for my exams I read various articles, I followed witchy blogs on tumblr (windvexer and witchtips are great blogs for beginners. Look for their masterposts!) and I collected enough info to start practicing one month later but understanding what I was doing. I’m not saying you should wait months to start but just be sure to be aware of the basis and the possible dangers.

Trust your guts! There are witches who will tell you super rare and expensive items are required in your craft. They will often tell you to use things you can’t have. I’m not saying they’re wrong, they are probably suggesting what it’s right in their practice. But they are sometimes not newbiesfriendly blogs. My suggestions is: do what it feels right for you. (But if you want to use herbs and eat them do some serious research first!!!) For example, if someone tells you you should use rose quartz for tranquillity but you don’t have it/don’t want to use crystals in your craft/you don’t associate tranquility with quartz, etc. don’t do it. Use a substitute! Plus, don’t underestimate the power of visualization. It takes practice, I know, but if you can’t have an item, just imagine you have it! And remember: magic doesn’t come from candles, crystals or whatever. It is within you. They just enhance it but they’re not essential.

Magic is real but do not confuse it with real life. Before you get pissed and think what I said it’s crap let me explain it. Magic is part of your life and your life is real, duh, but do not get overwhelmed by magic. In few words: don’t forget living. Don’t think every single thing that happens in your life is magical! If you see a bunny in a pet shop it probably isn’t a sign meant to you. It’s just a bunny. There are indeed signs hidden in your normal life but don’t think that everything is. 

Magic just gives a little push. You can’t perform magic with a purpose and without acting in the real world in order to make it happen. You can’t create a sigil to have new friends if you have 0 social interactions. Don’t ask for the impossible: a spell won’t allow you to meet Obama, I’m sorry, unless you live in the White House.

Don’t be afraid to live magic and muggle lives at the same time. I swear the first time I performed magic and I created a shield I felt bad going to the bathroom. It seems dumb, I know, but beginning the practice can be scary the first time. Don’t be ashamed of what’s natural and don’t be scared to use subtle magic when in company. Magic is part of you!

You don’t need labels. I repeat: YOU DON’T NEED LABELS! When I started practicing I felt the need to say out loud what my interests were. The truth? I couldn’t say it yet. Everything fascinated me so I just told people I was eclectic. But I actually am not. Don’t feel in a rush when you get into the magical realm. Just do what you like and you will later understand what you prefer.

It is okay if you’re not into everything magical! You will see lots of witches who use herbs in their practice. Others use crystals. And every spell you find online requires either herbs or crystals. You will spontaneously think they are essential for every witch but they are actually not. Don’t feel ashamed. Say it out loud: “I don’t like herbs!/I don’t like crystals!/I don’t like sigils!”. You can only love tarots and you can still be a witch. You can dislike jars and you will still be a witch.

It is okay if you don’t want to be called “witch”. I understand that this word is often used to describe someone nasty, ugly or unpleasant. Or you could just simply not like the word for your own personal reasons. You can use other terms, more specific about your craft: diviner, spirit worker, fortune teller, etc. Or if you just want a synonym of the word witch: magic practitioner, sorcerer, wizard. There are many others. Find the word you feel comfortable with.

Males can be witches as well. Witch is not just a word for women. If you’re male and you want to practice magic and be called a witch, go for it!

You don’t need to be in a coven. If you don’t want to be part of a group you can learn on your own. And that’s fine.

Be careful of the words you use. You’re new in the craft and you start using words like gipsy, spirit guides, strega, etc. Be very mindful of the words you choose! They can be disrespectful, cultural appropriation or misuse of terms about a closed practice. Do your own research and remember to be always respectful. If you misuse a word and people let you know it’s wrong apologize, be polite and change your attitude. It’s easy. Don’t let others define what’s right and what’s wrong. Some people say cursing is bad, blood magic is for evil witches, satanism is bad, etc. There is no “white magic” or “black magic”. Magic is neutral and it depends on you. You can curse and be the nicest person in the world. If you’re afraid of the three fold law I’d suggest to read this post and don’t let others influence you. It’s your choice. Not theirs.

Everyone can be a witch. When you discover magic is real and it’s not just in books you ask yourself “Can I be a witch?”. You may think you need someone in your family to “pass you the magical genes” or something like that. But what most of witches believe is that magic lies within each one of us. You can be more naturally talented but if you are not don’t be afraid. Speaking of books, remember that Hermione was born in a muggle family yet she was the greatest! If you don’t have natural talents you can still be a witch. Work hard and you will see great results!

Gender, sexual orientation, age, race, culture do not prevent you from being a witch. You can be transgender, asexual, African American, Chinese or whatever. You can still be a witch.
