“This is possibly one of the strangest records I’ve ever heard, certainly that I own. And this is quite a crowded field. I’ve written about Basil Kirchin before, when the Mind On The Run Sampler popped up on the randometer last March. It’s an excellent intro for the uninitiated into his unique world of sound. . This particular release has been described as “one of the most important improvised jazz-based recordings of all time” (Rough Trade) and “a true landmark recording” (Trunk) and features Kirchin’s field recordings of insects, animals, and the cries and babblings of children, manipulated on tape, accompanied by the improvised jazz of Derek Bailey on guitar and Evan Parker on saxophone. All in all, it creates a completely otherworldly aural landscape, truly worlds within worlds, the like of which I’ve never heard before. And I listen to quite a lot of weird shit. . There are two copies of the original 1971 release listed on Discogs, one from Slovakia for €4,800 and one in the UK for nearly double that. Luckily, Jonny Trunk, a Kirchin obsessive, repressed this for Record Store Day last year, and I jumped at the chance to snap up one of the limited 1600 copies. . When I first put this record on, with headphones plugged in, I sat silent and motionless for the duration, allowing myself to be submerged into this extraordinary sound. “Basil Kirchin is a unique and fascinating soul. I confess I had never heard of him until I received this free sampler from Trunk Records because I’d ordered several other CDs from Jonny Trunk’s emporium of the weird and wonderful world of sound. This sampler was produced by Trunk as part of Hull’s City of Culture year in 2017, which organised a weekend celebration of the life and work of Kirchin, the city’s long-lost son. Lost, only in that his talents are not more widely known and celebrated. The track listing on the sampler is almost identical to Trunk’s follow up release Basil Kirchin Is My Friend. . Kirchin started his musical life in the 1950s playing drums in his father’s jazz band, but it was his own experimental compositions in the 1960s for which he is rightly lauded and unjustly not famous enough. He started producing electronic music for imaginary films, a soundtrack for the world inside his head perhaps. And from there started to record a whole range of what is known as library music for films, TV documentaries and theatre. Many of these early electro-jazz-field recordings were for De Wolfe Music, generally regarded as the oldest, largest and original producer of library or production music...” .
