Sometimes.....one phot tells the whole story! A malfunctioning shot clock at @chartwayarena pretty much sums up the way the @oduwbasketball malfunctioned most of the night. In a heavyweight battle of two premier teams, the @ricewbb used an offensive spurt. In the third coupled with @odusports going cold in the 4th to claim a @conferenceusa victory. Both teams are back at it on Saturday but both the clock and team will@need to be reenergized and come out swinging to even the series! @wolfson32 @csteppig @espnw @gettyimages @sportscenter @sportsillustrated #goops #women #baskebtall #ReignOn #bringit #wegotnext #norfolkva #humbledonthehardwood (at Chartway Arena) https://www.instagram.com/p/CKFtZBLhLAd/?igshid=1rfeqaxfix9nt

Crossed Over
The Crossover by Kwame Alexander is novel written in verse through the eyes of a 7th grader named Josh Bell. Josh and his twin brother, who they call JB, are the sons of a European basketball star, they are also the star players on their 7th grade team. Basketball comes easy to Josh, but not everything is as easy as basketball. Josh has trouble adjusting to his twin brother getting a new girlfriend, and his fathers lingering health issues. Because this novel is written in different poems, Alexander is able to portray different feelings through each unique poem. At one point in the story Josh’s brother JB is upset with Josh for chucking a basketball at his face. Josh feels broken without JB talking to him, he expresses this in one poem titled “Dear Jordan.” Alexander uses line breaks and sentence staggering to express the broken feeling Josh is experiencing without his brother.
Often times in basketball when you “crossover” and opponent, the opponent becomes broken, or unable to move because their feet are so out of position. In the poem “Dear Jordan,” every other line is positioned on opposite sides of the page, much like a crossover. By writing it in this fashion Alexander is expressing to the reader that Josh feels broken without his brother, much like being crossed over he feels out of position and lost. In the poem Alexander writes,
“without you
i am empty,
the goal
with no net.
seems
my life was
broken,
shattered,
like puzzle pieces
on the court
i can no longer fit.” (Alexander, Pg 158)
Josh compares the feeling of not having his brother to that of a broken puzzle. This poem also reflects a broken puzzle where none of the lines fit together. By using poems Alexander is able to further express the feelings Josh is having without his brother by using line structure and line breaks.
