Apple Pie

#Gedeckte Apfelkuchen is another traditional German cake. I had to make one of these in my exams to become a baker. The apples in this one were tasty but still had some bite to them. They tasted fresh - the cake felt homemade. The sticky filling otherwise had strong notes of cinnamon spice (the real thing) and a few rum soaked raisins adding to the flavours. The pastry was sweet, but perfect.

This Apple Pie can be had at Bastians, my favorite place in Cologne when I have an appetite for traditional German baking. Unfortunately there café is big and loud and I find it unpleasant to sit there during their busy hours. I was able to enjoy this cake at their nice tables outside at the back where its quieter.
