I have been sorting through old address books. In one book from the eighties I found some stuff written in tiny writing on cigarette papers. Immediately recognisable. They were written by this man, Jeff Johnson, my old tutor and the man responsible for getting me into Goldsmiths' (along with Dave Milne) and I shall be forever in his debt. Forever. When I was 17 he invited me to his house and his lovely wife Serena made me pizza. I pretended I wasn't hungry because I was too embarrassed to eat in public. He told me he was friends with Anthony Green, and gave me his daughter Kate Green's address, written on a cigarette paper of course (scroll to see). She was in the year above me at college, but I never had the courage to approach her. I was like a fish out of water. Yesterday, I stumbled upon his obituary in the Guardian. There is a link in my bio if you are interested in reading it. He died earlier this year, and I am so sad I didn't find out in time to make it to the funeral and say Goodbye. I reckon this picture was taken c1985 as I recognise that sweatshirt, and this is how I will always remember him, always with a tab in his hand like that. I don't know who took the photograph.
