I’ve got a bone to pick with the Bandai Namco Battle Pods. I was at a Dave and Busters yesterday and played the Star Wars Battle Pod.
I thought it was really lame. It felt like such a missed opportunity. I feel the same way about the Ace Combat version, Mach Storm. The technology is amazing. You have this awesome dome setup that fills your entire field of view and the graphics for both Mach Storm and the Star Wars game are really good.
The problem is that the game sucks.
I'm actually a bit of an Assault Horizon apologist, but even I didn't like this. Imagine the on-rails, lack of control, watching a STEEL CARNAGE cutscene feeling from AH, but turned up to eleven. The big problem that both games have is that you don't really feel like you're doing anything. The controls are so imprecise, and the game auto-aims so much that when you beat a level and get a score, it doesn’t feel like it's because of any skill you might have had. Instead, it just seems like that’s the way it worked out that run.
It's such a shame. The game doesn't even have to be mechanically complex. The old Star Wars Trilogy Arcade game was literally an on rails shooter where all you did was move a cursor around with a joystick and shoot stuff, but that game was hard. When you beat that game, it's because you were good enough to beat it. It's one of my favorite arcade games of all time. The game also wasn't constantly trying to one-up itself and interrupt you with over the top spectacle and just let you shoot stuff.
These game should be better. In the case of the Ace Combat one, check out Sega's Strike Fighter arcade game. That's how you do an Ace Combat arcade game. A game like that with the huge dome would be great. Ditto for Star Wars.
This is how I felt about almost all the games I played at that Dave and Busters yesterday. I doubt if I should use a Dave and Busters on I-Drive of all places as an indication of what an arcade and arcade game is these days, but it was thoroughly disappointing, and the Battle Pods are a perfect encapsulation of the problem.
I retried the mission of Yavin!(but I failed it…again😵)
