We had a chance to observe GEV award winning wastewater treatment system where the effluent water is used to irrigate Papaya and other fruits and hence at GEV they jokingly refer to Papaya as “Poopaya”. The CUNY team also had a chance to see a demonstration of the pyrolysis plant that converts single use plastic into diesel fuel and to see the composting system that converts food waste into manure that is sold on the local market to farmers at heavily reduced prices. The CUNY team also planted trees at GEV to offset our CO2 carbon footprint from the long flights from NYC to India and within the 5 states in India. A tree can typically remove 20 tons of CO2 over its lifespan.
