As we close out our first #BCCSpotlight series it has been a true pleasure to share some great creators, artists, and writers in the comic book field! And today's #BCCSpotlight is really special, as 1/4 of the #BlackComicsChat team I would be remiss not to recognize the writer and creators of the comic #SnowDaze @marcus_kwame and Leonardo Faierman!! Current New York natives (Albany and NYC) Marcus and Leo are quite the force when it comes to comics !! Marcus brings the illustrations and Leo pens the artistic lyrics. If they individually or collectively are not on your radar, you should change that today! In and out of comics both Marcus and Leo have a passion for each of their crafts and it shows in their work constantly! Not only do they give you commentary on #BlackComicsChat but they contribute to the craft as well! Today's #BCCSpotlight is a "cultural worker, educator, writer, organizer" and creator of the social/political comic "(H)afrocentric", Juliana "Jewels" Smith @hafrocentric . Based in the West Coast Smith creatively uses her voice to discuss such topics as racial and gender equality/justice, current politics laced with humor through her comic. Being able to create a space within comics that represents women of color voices and speak to the current day issues is is much needed. Smith definitely embodies what it means to provide a visual, literary entertaining medium. Nothing like offering a visual critique! #ArtAsActivism #SharingIsCaring #RepresentationMatters

Today's #BCCSpotlight takes us to the Midwest!! Ariel Monroe @ariemonroe is a cartoonist, comic artist, animator, and caricature artist. Known for her tag line "Exaggerating the Beautiful Side of You" Arie brings light to features that some may stigmatize, but glowingly highlights them. Arie embraces the curvy girl, and lets you know she is worthy of attention. As an illustrator, Arie specializes in Pinup Art, animator and licensing illustrations. Some of Arie's clients include Upperdeck, RittenHouse, Versicolor Productions, among others. And when Arie is not drawing with "GirlsDrawinGirls" or "Drawingfrenzy" you can find her doing private caricature commissions and parties. The comic and caricature world is honored to have a skilled and talented artist like Arie Monroe. #SharingIsCaring #TellingHerStory #RepresentationMatters

Today's #BCCSpotlight is a legend in the field of comics, Dwayne McDuffie. McDuffie is known for thinking outside the box and making sure characters are being truly represented regardless of their race. His work can be found in the creation of the character and animated television series "Static Shock", the "Justice League Unlimited", the animated tv series and video game "Ben 10", "Teen Titans", and Marvel Comics "Fantastic Four". Not only was McDuffie a writer and creator, but co-founded the Black owned comic book company Milestone Media. McDuffie's story is quite interesting as his early career crosses many areas from English to Physics to Film. There are not enough words to describe the impact and legacy left by Dwayne McDuffie for all generations. Even though we lost a great treasure in Dwayne McDuffie, his work forever remains relevant. #SharingIsCaring #RepresentationMatters #TellingOurStories

We are coming into the homestretch of our spotlight series! And today's #BCCSpotlight goes to film, comic and graphic novel writer David Walker @mofoman68 !! A past guest of #BlackComicsChat , Walker has an amazing body of work particularly in the comic book arena. His work includes the Dynamite Entertainment series "Shaft", Marvel Comics "Power Man and Iron Fist", "Nighthawk", "Secret Wars: Battleworld" DC Comics "Cyborg", and Dark Horse Comics "Number 13", among others. Walker's work is also notable in the film and cinema genre as well. One thing without question about Walker is his passion and commitment. What he gives to you is the raw deal, whether you like it or not! Whether it's about current day issues/events, a comic book series, or a film, Walker's voice is heard. As result, dedication to his craft just comes second nature for him. Nothing like telling the truth! #SharingIsCaring #RepresentationMatters

Today's #BCCSpotlight goes to the one and only Sanford Greene @sanfordgreene !! Greene is the definition of a gift that keeps giving...his talent as an artist. In his own words, Greene speaks to his passion as such, " I love to draw and create characters. I love discovering new ways to develop concepts. Plus characters can be varied. That type of work is never dull." And Greene proves this constantly in his work. Some of his work includes DC Comics Superman and Teen Titans GO!; Marvel Comics Power Man and Iron Fist and Black Panther as well as work in other book publishers like Dark Horse, Archie Comics, and Harper Collins. In addition to working in comics, Greene has also done work with SONY, Warner Brothers, HASBRO, EA Sports, among others. The work of Greene has touched so many spaces and continues to do so!! #SharingIsCaring #RepresentationMatters

TGIF!! Today's #BCCSpotlight is a pioneer in the cartoon and comic field, Ollie Harrington. Mr. Harrington who is best known for his comic character "Bootsie" began his career in the 1930s when there were few Blacks in the cartoonist profession. The great Langston Hughes referred to Harrington as "America's greatest African American cartoonist". Harrington who began drawing cartoons as a way to vent his frustrations about racism transformed that energy into social activism and political satire. Harrington was one of the first Black cartoonist to advocate against racism and for civil rights. His drawings transcended beyond characters, but also conveyed strong messages. Talk about voicing your thoughts through drawing. #ArtAsActivism #RepresentationMatters #SharingIsCaring

Tuesday Turn Up!! Today's #BCCSpotlight is from NYC-based cartoonist and illustrator Chuck Collins @bounce_comic !! Collins is a talent who has worked in various animation studios, but who also uses his own real life experiences to tell stories. During his time as a bouncer, Collins saw his share things both good and bad, so much so they turned into stories in his webcomics series BOUNCE! Collins truly finds enjoyment in producing great quality art, and we appreciate his transparency and candor! There's no sugar coating when it comes to the work of Chuck Collins!
