From the silence tentative taps, a modal fluttering which resolves into slurries of notes that seem to come at you from all angles, darting like wounded hummingbirds. It is the sound of  becoming and the arresting beginning to the eponymous third album from Norwegian saxophonist Bendik Giske. With the encouragement of British electronic producer Beatrice Dillon, Giske sheds extraneous elements to focus on the intimate physical relationship between musician and instrument. Recorded in single takes with no overdubs, every sound on the album emanates from the saxophone and the body. The results are demanding, alien and undeniably powerful. Concentrating on repetitive rhythmic patterns, harmonics and tone, Giske creates his musical space and inhabits it with uncompromising conviction. Discarding the melodic focus and reverb drenched production of his 2021 album Cracks, Giske delves deep into the process of producing sound. The breath cycle, the tongue and lips on the reed, the fingers working the keys, muscular control and mental discipline.

Self-titling the album seems a deliberate statement, and the music here feels like a distillation of his artistic vision. The culmination of a career spent stripping away the inessential and claiming his place outside the academy and jazz orthodoxy. His music can be harsh, it privileges  and embraces imperfection, finds worth in flaws, presents what it is, as it is. The skittering percussive effects of keys and levers drive “Rhizome,” as Giske blows quietly insistent cohorts of notes that blend pitches and semitones, intensifying with each elaboration, its balance building tensile strength from fragile threads. It’s a pattern that recurs throughout, palimpsests of sound gaining power through repetition and rigorous interrogation of their source. The momentum is not always smooth, “Rush” barrels along as if in desperate flight, in the higher register the saxophone slips between legato and staccato. The final track “End” serves as a somber coda to the album, notes from the lowest register, drawn out and overlapped with a visceral quiver as if emanating from Giske’s core. 

If sometimes demanding Bendik Giske is the sound of an artist delving deep to express essential truths in his music. It is a record that will reward the time you spend with it, unfurling to reveal a tensile beauty at the heart of Giske’s liminal improvisations.
