Bittersweet Endings

Hawke as Grey Warden Rook and Emmrich

They walked hand in hand through the Memorial Gardens, admiring the many statues and graves. They'd stopped to speak with Emmrich's parents earlier and now just wandered through the peaceful monuments.

She didn't want to bring it up, but she'd delayed as long as she could. She paused, reaching out to take Emmrich's other hand in her own and looked up at him with tired blue eyes.

"Darling, what's wrong?" Emmrich asked, immediately sensing something was amiss.

Rook said softly and simply, "It's time."

Emmrich's brown eyes widened in knowing and he nodded. "Ah. I am sorry, my dearest Marian."

"We always knew it would come," she replied. "Twenty two years is a good run." Carver had gone years ago. Now, it was her turn.

"It is," Emmrich agreed, though he might wish for another 20 with her, he knew the reality of the song in her head. "How long do you think you might have, enough time to see everyone one last time?"

Marian cocked her head, "A few weeks before I must leave perhaps."

"Then I shall write everyone tonight," Emmrich decided. "The Lighthouse?"

"Yes please," she said, grateful for him and his willingness to write their friends.

"We shall have one last farewell with our friends before you must leave then." He kissed her gently. "I love you, darling."

"I love you too, Emmrich."

It had been bittersweet, seeing her friends from Kirkwall, the Veilguard, and their allies again. Rook had refused to let anyone dwell on the fact that they would not see her again after this.

She and Emmrich returned to their apartment in the Necropolis after everyone had reluctantly left the Lighthouse. They would have one last night together in their bed.

They made love, slow and sweet, mapping each other's bodies with their hands a thousand times before. They were old and they were slower than they might have been when they met, but they were both fit, and they knew each other well.

She arose in the morning and packed a smack bag. They'd agreed they would not have a protracted goodbye. This was difficult enough as it was.

She walked alone to the Grand Necropolis's eluvian. She planned to go to Kal Sharok and enter the Deep Roads from there.

Marian's steps came to an abrupt halt when she saw Emmrich waiting with Manfred and Vorgoth at the mirror.

"Emmrich," she stared at him. He was dressed in traveling clothes and had his staff. "What are you doing?"

"I'm coming with you," he said simply.

"Emmrich! You may have years yet. You shouldn't come to the Deep Roads with me!"

He reached out and took her hand. "Marian, dearest, do you remember our wedding vows?"

"Hand in hand we walk, in this life and the next," Rook repeated the words they'd said together so many years ago.

Emmrich nodded. "I cannot bear to be parted from you, my darling. So I will follow you into the depths, to the end."

"But you're crypt!" Marian protested. "You cannot be buried if your body is in the Deep Roads!"

"Mother," Manfred stepped forward to give Rook a bony hug. "Father will go with you. I will fetch your bones when it is all done."

"Manfred, it may be too dangerous," she replied softly.

"HE SHALL HAVE COMPANY TO SAFELY RETRIEVE YOUR BONES. YOU SHALL BOTH LIE IN YOUR CRYPT WHEN IT IS DONE," Vorgoth informed her.

Rook looked at Emmrich. "How long have you been planning this?"

"Since you told me it was time," the Necromancer replied simply.

She searched his face for a long moment. At last the Warden threw her arms around him and kissed him fiercely. "I love you so much, Emmrich."

"I love you too, dearest Marian, amd I shall not be parted from you," Emmrich said firmly.

In the end, after their last goodbyes to Manfred and Vorgoth, the Warden and the Necromancer entered the Eluvian together.

They would walk hand in hand, forever.

hey guys remember this drawing? i said i’d make it digital? well i did. and it looks AWESOME.

FUCK man! so good! i love it so much.

it took me a little over an hour, which i was not expecting. then again there aren’t a ton of details.

don’t you love the fact that the light of the Core does not shine in the Void, only reflects off of the Host? the Host is also slowly sinking, being absorbed into the Core. she may be nearly waist deep, but she’s already so far gone. the antlers remind her that even though she may not be actively doing anything she is still in use. she is hurting people. but she can’t do anything. the Core is too big. the eyes all focus on her. it is because of her that they can do anything, yet they must keep eyes on her.

none of that made any sense but okay

if you guys don’t love this i will cry :D
