Askia the Great (Askia Mohammed I) ca.1443–1538. Called richest man in history. Emperor, military commander, political reformer of Songhai Empire. Successor of Sunni Ali Ber. He strengthened the country (largest in West Africa's history), comprising Hausa states, Kano (now Nigeria) and territories previously belonging to Sonnghai empire in west. His policies resulted in expansion of trade with Europe & Asia, creation of schools, and made Islam an integral part of the empire.
