It was Ramadan and there was little activity about the city. I had been roaming the streets of Shiraz with no destination in mind. The summer heat had sapped me of all energy and I wandered into a small park looking for shade. Underneath this tree, seated at a bench—the man in this photograph moved to one side and signaled for me to join him. At first I thought he was merely being polite, but then he engaged me in conversation. We both quickly discovered that neither of us shared the benefit of a common verbal language. He attempted to communicate to me in Persian and I attempted to respond in English–both of us using gestures to express our thoughts. Despite not being able to understand a word of what the other said, we carried out a conversation like this for what I assume was fifteen minutes. Even without verbal understanding I felt there was a connection with this person and that face to face interaction somehow managed to transcend the limits of words. This was the experience that became the inspiration for my latest film Shiraz which will be playing @vanshortfilmfest one week from today on January 25. Also, if you’re in Toronto don’t miss the film which will be playing as part of @indiefilmto on January 21st at Innis Town Hall. Check the link in my bio for details on all upcoming screenings.
