WARNING: this post contains spoilers for Madoka Magica and Rebellion. The anime is good, although it may not seem like it at first, and is better experienced with no spoilers. I recommend watching it, forming your own opinions, and then coming back to read this later.

I feel like Bebe's introduction in Rebellion serves a greater purpose than some analysis that I've seen from other people I know/people on the internet. This may just be a perspective I haven't heard before, but Bebe I feel like, besides being adorable and being "Sayaka's back up" also serves a greater, thematical purpose

When Homura realizes they are in a Labyrinth, she immediately assumes this is Bebe's doing, as she is the only one that looks like a witch. It makes sense; witches were the enemies for a greater chunk of the series. However, I feel like, besides making her not realize that she is in fact the witch, Bebe's existence humanizes witches, and closes the gap that exists in viewer's brains between them and magical girls.

Witches are magical girls who've succumb to despair, the "final form" of a magical girl. Bebe was a magical girl before, just as Homura. Making Bebe seem adorable compared to her appearance in the show, and having Sayaka talk about witches from the perspective of them being victims instead of perpetrators, helps us not see Homura as the villain for being a witch, but as a victim to Kyubey.

(of course, I'm addressing the first part of the movie here. It's hard for me to analyze the point beyond Homura splitting the Law of Cycles since we haven't been shown the consequences of that. Still I believe that ending the movie with the ultimate "selfish" act contrasts well with the end of the series as the ultimate selfless act)

Anyway, what I'm trying to say is focusing on Bebe as the obvious villain cause she is a witch makes us the viewer also not realize Kyubey is in fact the villain. The whole first half of the movie focuses on finding out who the witch is, so it's hard to even think about HOW a witch even exists in this world.

Although Rebellion is a very complex movie that may take a couple of watchthroughs to fully understand, I do believe it includes very thoughtful, detailed writing, and I encourage anyone to watch it along with the show. It does have a very different vibe to the show, but I do still think it is a good expansion of the Madoka universe overall, and I'm excited for Walpurgisnacht Rising!!! (hopefully it'll actually come out in February)
