A not-so-typical letter to Santa Claus
Dear Santa Claus, You represent so much. You represent innocence, childlike faith and you represent humanity. Because you are a lie, a fairytale at best. Now, I don't mean this to be offensive in anyway, I'd just like to get things straight. As children we tend to put our hope in so many things, because we crave something/someone to put our faith in. Hence you, you are a result of our desires. Our hopes and dreams and wildest wishes we've combined to create you. We needed a destination for our wants. Something, excuse me, someone to fulfill our childlike desires. Don't get me wrong, you are more than just a disposal for our wishes. You started out as Saint Nick; a jolly ol' fellow who was as generous as any good natured person could be. But he did more with that generosity, he put it to good use and changed lives. As that character evolved you were formed. Some would say it was out of selfish intent that you were made. However true that may be you represent childlike faith, and there's nothing more beautiful than the faith of a child. The way a child uses their imagination to create brand new worlds and whimsical ideas. They have a heart full of hope and believe in whatever they put their mind to. It's a wonderful thing that all too often gets lost on the way to "growing up". Yet you somehow preserve this, just by being there. By being in our thoughts and dreams you give us the ability to think like a child again. You give us the power to free ourselves from these grown up adult lives. Even if just for a season. Even if just for a moment. In the midst of all our stress and anxiety you are the calm in the storm. You provide us the tranquil release we need. We will go through our holidays rushing to get things done just to rush to get things started again. We'll be flying through the stores, buzzing by our neighbors, trying to get everywhere all at once. Till we finally come to the end of a day and find ourselves tucking our children into bed. The very creatures we're doing all of this for, the very thing that keeps us going will also be what gives us a break. As we kiss them on their foreheads we'll tell them yet again the story of - well, your story. We'll tell them about you and for a moment we might even start to believe it ourselves. For a moment we believe that there is someone who is going to come while we are unaware and leave us with secret gifts that we will be pleasantly surprised with when we wake up. It's a nice thought, really. And, if you think about it, it's not all untrue. When we don't even expect it we may be left with a pleasant surprise which we will find when we get up and finally unwrap our dreams. So maybe you aren't a total lie and maybe even the most grown up grown ups like to believe in you sometimes. Because we all need something to believe in and wish for. I guess all that's left to say is thank you. Thank you for giving us something to believe in and share. Because only the best secrets are shared. Love always, Tessa
