A Recipe for Love
“It was like magic…The day we met, I mean.” Ignis smiles, pushing his glasses up. He sits in contemplative silence for a moment, before bursting into laughter. You blush, knowing exactly what he’s thinking about. Half hearted explanations and overused apologies leave your lips, but they fall on deaf ears. He’s too high on the memory to even hear you.
“You were...you were so scared by…” He’s trying unsuccessfully to breath. “Breakfast!” He’s wiping tears from his eyes because he’s laughing so hard.
“It wasn’t the omelet! It was you! You gave me a heart attack, you ninja!”
That day in Noctis’s apartment, you were sitting on the couch with your back to the kitchen, playing Outlast with your best friend. Ignis had been there the whole.damn.time. He had been using Noct’s kitchen because the power in his apartment was out. And you hadn’t heard him!
You went into the kitchen to get a snack, where you found a stray frying pan. It seemed out of place, considering Noctis never cooked. You were holding the rogue utensil in your hand when Ignis came around the corner.
It had to have been the horror games and caffeine and perhaps even your growling stomach, that caused you to have THAT battle cry that day.
“OMELET!!!!” You screamed as you swung the pan at Ignis, hitting the young man squarely in the chest and sending the plate of half eaten omelet flying.
Ignis was knocked to the ground before you. He stared in terrified shock up at his attacker. When his eyes and mind unclouded from adrenaline, he saw you.
Your face was red and screwed into a thousand different emotions at once: terror, realization, shock, and so many more. To him, you looked adorable, cuddling with a dirty frying pan.
In that moment, he saw you for what humanity was supposed to be. You were so beautifully human, so magically imperfect, a masterpiece of emotional complexity. Through you, he saw everything wonderful in the world.
You looked down to see Ignis. This was the closest you had ever been to him! You studied every detail of his handsome face, his slender fingers, and sculpted body as he sat sprawled out on the linoleum before you. It was like you were looking down at a gift from the gods as you cuddled the makeshift weapon in your hands.
Noctis had come running into the kitchen to the scene at hand. You remember the utter and complete feeling of embarrassment. You were sure your life was over. Everything was over. How could you have done that?! Ignis and Noctis both would hate you and…
You stammered, trying to explain the situation and making a mess out of your own language, but it didn’t matter. The room was soon filled with laughter from Ignis and Noctis as they recounted the situation. Even you burst into laughter as Noctis imitated your cry and Ignis dissolved into gasps and squeaks.
As his lungs settled, Ignis’s heart took flight. He saw you smile and could have sworn that otherwise useless beating bastard physically left his chest. He sat, stunned yet again, as he watched you. Love was a spell and your smile cast it upon him.
“That’s a great story, guys, but I’m ready for the Bachelor Party,” Gladio booms from across the table, bringing you out of your blissful memory.
You and Ignis exchange knowing smiles as he rises from his seat. Your hand finds his as he announces that the parties should split into their respective nights of debauchery.
“I’ll see you tomorrow, darling.” You kiss him as you get ready to separate for the night.
“I wouldn’t miss it for the world.” He responds.
~Bonus Dialogue~
“We are not serving omelets at the wedding…”
Ignis puffs up his chest and uses his best announcer voice: “BY THE SIX WE ARE! AND I’VE GOT JUST THE RECIPE!”
