random question / thought, but did we ever see hugh's raw reaction upon discovering that fiona's tongue was litearlly cut out? chapter 12 of tcotb ended almost immediately after the 'big reveal', and since we didn't get to see much of a reaction from him.

i just find it odd and a little sad because i would've KILLED to see that man have an actual crash out. he spent what i assume is many months pleading with his friends to help search for her, only to be written off as 'hysterical'. but as it turns out, he was right about her being alive the entire time and their waiting caused irreversible physical and mental damage to the love of his life that possibly could've been prevented had they searched earlier. idk abt you guys, but if i was hugh i would've been beyond pissed.

and this might just be the fugh stan in me speaking, but it also would've been nice to see hugh utterly devastated on her behalf to further establish how much he truly loves and cares for her. :(

then again, we very well could've gotten that moment in the books. unfortunately, i just have the memory of a goldfish and it's also been ages since i've read the series, lol! feel free to correct me, but from what i do recall, fiona and hugh's respective trauma / arcs were very much brushed under the rug by the time the events in desolations occurred.

some (more) self-indulgent fugh hcs in honor of hugh apiston's birthday. ♡🐝

𝜗𝜚 you know those little flavored honey sticks they sometimes have at farmers markets? well to pass time in the loop, he makes them for the other children using fiona's fruits for flavor! and of course, she is his designated taste-tester.

𝜗𝜚 she wears an apron while cooking (my little irish victorian grandma) and hugh finds it absurdly cute. every time he sees her wearing it, he can’t keep from smothering her in kisses.

𝜗𝜚 fiona's favorite spot to kiss hugh is his cheek. hugh's favorite spot to kiss fiona varies from her button nose to her neck (cause she's super ticklish there).

𝜗𝜚 i mentioned this hc a while ago but fiona can't swim for the life of her. so whenever the kids head out to the shore for a beach day, hugh offers to carry her into the water so she doesn't feel left out.

𝜗𝜚 she's a great cook, but there have been some occassions where she would try to be a little ... experimental. and cook up something genuinely atrocious. despite this, hugh would choke down the entire meal as to not hurt her feelings.

𝜗𝜚 every time they go on dates, all of the other children would tease / mock them - the 'lovebirds'. fiona finds it funny, but hugh gets SO aggravated.

𝜗𝜚 when fiona is angry at him he will toss her over his shoulder and walk her around until she's laughing again.

𝜗𝜚 hugh adores fiona's long, waist-length hair. he begged emma to teach him how to braid so he can fix it into pretty styles, but even after decades, he is still terrible at it.

𝜗𝜚 hugh is fiona's favorite subject to draw - her muse, if you will. the pages of her sketchbook are filled with him doing mundane little things - cooking, playing with the other children, napping, etc!

𝜗𝜚 hugh used to go on these outings with abe and victor, most often to the local pub (priest hole). he would often invite fiona, but the bustle and yells of the other boys would overwhelm her. to that, he would drop ANYTHING to check up on her / make sure she's having a nice time.

𝜗𝜚 speaking of which!!! fiona is such a light-weight, it's not even funny. hugh will be chugging down pints whereas it only takes one glass of cheap beer for her to get all woozy.

𝜗𝜚 so their little 'pub dates' often end with a slightly tipsy hugh carrying a veryyyy drunk fiona home.

𝜗𝜚 when feeding each other, they alwaysss insist on giving each other the final bite. this may or may not be a result of their famine-related trauma ... that fear of the other going hungry...

𝜗𝜚 every time either of them go out to run errands for miss peregrine in the village, they ALWAYS return with a little sweet treat for their lover, even if it means spending the last of their allowance.

𝜗𝜚 hugh gets himself injured a lot, and fiona will always insist on being the one to patch him up.

i find it rlly sweet (and a little sad) how hugh went from getting all embarrassed when the others simply watched him hug fiona goodbye in hollow city, to him spewing all these endearments and holding her without shame later in the series when she was brought back.

he must have felt so, so guilty for pushing her away during what could’ve very well been their last embrace, and was therefore fumbling to make up for it… poor guy.
