Clan Lore: Eye Types (Arcane)

My headcanons for the different eye types of the Arcane element. Two years too late? Maybe. But I have the inspiration today so I’ll write this up today.

Probably not going to do any others, at least not anytime soon. It’s mostly for my own lair purposes, and since I have an Arcane lair, my hatchlings will have Arcane eyes unless I hatch a Gen 1.

Natural

Common

Arcane dragons with Common eyes are, much like the the eye type suggests, the most average of their kind. They express magic and curiosity as much as any Arcane dragon is expected to. These dragons are the standard that the other eye types are compared to.

Uncommon

Arcane dragons with Uncommon eyes are generally more in-tune with magic than their Common-eyed siblings, and their experiments in the realm of magic tend to be more successful. They are prone to gathering in cliques, believing that they are more gifted than the Common-eyed siblings, and they tend to have more trouble relating to their non-Arcane clanmates.

Unusual

Unusual-eyed Arcane dragons need to be treated with care. Arcane dragons are notoriously susceptible of becoming Shade-infected, and Unusual-eyed Arcane dragons are more susceptible than most. Even without the Shade, Unusual-eyed dragons tend to cause more destruction in their experiments than their siblings, although that’s just a coincidence, right?

Rare

On the other end of the spectrum, Rare-eyed Arcane dragons are much less attuned to magic compared to their siblings. They also tend to be less spontaneous, thinking through their experiments and causing far less damage than the average Arcane dragon. Rare-eyed Arcane dragons are the ones you’re more likely to see traveling to other regions representing Arcane, as they oftentimes feel out-of-place in Arcane territory, but feel a lot more like an Arcane dragon when amongst dragons of different elements.

Faceted

Arcane dragons with Faceted eyes do not see like dragons with more common eye types. They instead see the flows of magic itself, watching it coalesce around other dragons. It is said they can see into your soul and are great judges of character, but in truth they can only see the type of magic that you emit and attract.

Goat

Arcane dragons with Goat eyes (and dragons with Goat eyes in general) are marked by having strong instincts and weak wills. They tend to relate more to animals than other dragons, and some never learn to interact with dragon society at all. While their strong instincts can help them and other dragons sense when something is amiss, oftentimes Goat-eyed dragons are preyed upon by the Shade for their weak wills.

Multi-Gaze

Arcane dragons with Multi-Gaze actually aren’t all that different from their Common siblings other than the extra eyes. The main differences are physical - that they have more awareness of their surroundings and have a much higher chance of being poked in the eye. Socially, some clans shun them for being different, while others embrace them for being unique.

Primal

Arcane dragons born with Primal eyes are the most in-tune with magic any dragon can be. Some say these dragons are pure magic itself taking on a dragon form. Whatever the truth is, these dragons are Uncommon-eyed dragons and Faceted-eyed dragons combined: they are extremely adept mages and can see magic itself.

Unnatural

While Natural-eyed dragons are born with their traits, Unnatural-eyed dragons gain them through life experience.

Glowing

Arcane dragons earn Glowing eyes through becoming the most adept mages. Their abilities rival those with Primal eyes, and unlike Primal-eyed dragons, they will always know how to use it.

Dark Sclera

Arcane Dragons with Dark Sclera almost exclusively gain it through contact with the Shade. Whether or not the dragon has overcome the evil presence’s influence, the dark sclera remains, a scar of a dark past.

Swirl

This dragon is actively hypnotized. Origin of hypnosis unclear.

Innocent

Innocent eyes are entirely a choice on account of the dragon. Dragons have their pupils dilated, letting them have better night vision at the expense of having sunlight feel too bright. Arcane dragons often use spells to cause this effect, making it so they can stargaze more effectively.

((If it were a Natural eye type, it would cause dragons to act as if children even into adulthood. Some are very sweet children, others selfish. But no, it’s not a Natural eye type and I’m still salty about that.))

Site Polls and How I Voted

This is mostly for my own memory/records.  Sometimes fun to look back.

Polls, how I voted, why I voted that way, the results, how I thought it’d turn out, how it really turned out:

Second Festival Year Familiar Choice:

How I voted: Haha bears.  But really, Imps sound cool (not sure how this counted)

Why: I was amused by Undel’s “BEARS!  RAWR!” note and wanted to mention it.  I liked the idea of male equivalents to the Sprites so I voted Imps which would have been that.

Results: Bears won by a landslide

How I thought it’d turn out: Cuddly-wuddly teddy bears in worst-case, strong majestic bears in best-case.

How it really turned out: Some were strong and majestic, some, including Arcane (my flight) were cute and cuddly.  Was not pleased because by my flight’s representative. Imps and Elementals were released later years, and I believe my expectations were met for them.

Should the Bears Retire or Not?:

How I voted: They should retire

Why: I like the idea of having limited-edition items that are clearly limited-edition that show since when that person has been around the site.  Plus, consistency with the Sprites so there isn’t as big a divide between the first and second years.

Results: They were not going to retire

How I thought it’d turn out: Bears would be worth significantly less than their Sprite counterparts, confusion all around about what is actually retiring as people invest in the Bears thinking they’ll be like Sprites.

How it really turned out: Pretty much exactly as I thought.

Treasure Tert or Gem Genes Next?:

This one was pretty inconsequential in the grand scheme of things and I hardly remember it.

How Should Piebald be Handled?:

How I voted: Primary/Secondary, always white.

Why: I wanted to be able to have it on just the body or just the wings, and the faded colors didn’t look good to me.

Results: Primary/Secondary, always white

How I thought it’d turn out: There were pictures, there was no misunderstandings here.

How it really turned out: ^

Third Festival Cycle Polls:

How I voted: Recolored Item: Necklace>Banner>Crown>Halo.  Which should not be retired: Recolored Item>Familiar>Unique Item (not sure exact order, but I know Recolored Item was first)(Also voiced that I did not want any to return in the topic)

Why: I liked matching sets (Necklace was going to match first-year’s bracelets), my mental image of the banner looked cool, my mental image of the halo looked really lazy.  For the second: the recolored items never are worth much anyway.

Results: Crowns won, and were to be the item that would not retire.

How I thought it’d turn out: Crowns would look like the Gilded Crown (but with different art of course) and would be pretty similar to one another.  They would be released at Night of the Nocturne with the Bears and some recolors and would have no value.

How it really turned out: Crowns were over-the-top royalty crowns.  They have come back in Joxar’s Spare Inventory in starting in 2017, along with every other Festival item since then. Halos were released in 2018 and far exceeded my expectations, as I expected a small glowing ring above the head, and we got a magnificent glowing ring around the head. These may change with the element but I’m not sure since I wrote this part in June.

How to release Python/Morph:

How I voted: Keep them in the Treasure Marketplace

Why: While I liked the idea of Coliseum-exclusive scrolls, Python and Morph didn’t seem to do anything interesting with markings or colors, so they shouldn’t be treated any differently than other similar scrolls.

Results: Coliseum release

How I thought it’d turn out: The scrolls would be hard to come by, and dragons gened with it would be rare at first.  The price would eventually go down for the dragons just as any other, but the scroll would remain high.

How it really turned out: Exactly as expected at first. Eventually Coli genes became a lot cheaper than other types of genes.

What should Tapir look like?:

How I voted: Thin Markings

Why: While it isn’t my favorite variation, the thicker ones look too much like Ripple. The thinner markings stand out a bit more. I would have preferred an option with the the thicker markings on the wings of 1 without the thicker markings on the body though.

Flair Mane Color Future

How I voted: Manes like Obelisks originally had, with outer wing gradient across the inner wing color used as the man base. Also sparkles.

Why: Sparkles. I went through the colors and found I liked the old and new ones in about equal frequency. But Tundra Flair was pretty bare and would benefit from sparkles.

Results: Hasn’t been released yet!

How I thought it’d turn out: Whichever way, people are going to be upset.
