What did you think of Natalya’s siblings when you met them? And found out they and Silvia were following you guys on your first date lmao
Maite: Well, I’ve known Ivan and Katyusha even before I knew Natalya all too well, so I had opinions about them waaay before hand. I didn’t think too much in particular about Kat, she was very nice is all. Ivan... well, at the time, things were really rocky, so I wasn’t too fond of him.
As for how I found them all infiltrating Natalya and I’s first date?
Well, I turned around and noticed something off about a couple nearby.
The two disguised themselves and followed us. Not much of a disguise if I recognized them easily.
Kat and Nergüi were in the table next to me, but I didn’t even realize because they actually knew how to be discreet. I didn’t find out until they told me.
...
Yeah, I beat Silvia with the newspaper after that.
Gabriel walked over to Natalya, his hand held behind his back, “Happy Birthday!”
He revealed a gift box from behind his back, holding it up towards Natalya, “I got you something~”
She was honestly shocked, “And I was about to get mad at you.”
“Heh. Here! Open it! I’m sure you’ll love it.”
Natalya delicately grabbed the gift and began to unwrap it. She pulled away the wrapping paper gently as she wanted to hold onto it and opened the box to reveal what was inside.
It was a trinket box, one that was very familiar. It’s dark purple ceramic and silver and gold decals resembled one she saw not too long ago. She gently stroked the box and felt the little details of it. She couldn’t believe it.
“You actually got it!” Natalya exclaimed.
Gabriel nodded back, “You were practically drooling over that thing, so I knew I had to get it for you. I held onto it for a couple weeks, just for today. Clever, wasn’t I? I hid it at my mother’s place.”
“Clever indeed...” she walked over to Gabriel and pulled him close.
Who is your cousin? The one who you live with, along with their girlfriend

“Guys you have a room!”
“Couch is better”
“Yeah”
Silvia: I live with my prima Maite and her girlfriend, Natalya. These two have been together since like junior year in high school and are still going strong. Living with them is fun and sometimes annoying
If Maite hadn’t gotten with Natalya then I probably wouldn’t have met Ivan so it’s all good ^^

Another lovely celebration. Another year that reminded Maite how far she’s come. She leaned on the edge of the balcony; her hand toying with the flowers and vines that hung around. The lights, the happiness in the streets, and colors that reminded her of bittersweet and joyful memories. She sighed happily.
“Maite,” Natalya said, “Can I talk to you?”
Natalya had a soft smile and a look in her eyes. Maite turned around, smiling back at her girlfriend.
“Sure!”
She walked over to Natalya, kissing her softly before the words could be spoken.
Natalya started off, holding Maite’s hands, “We became closer and closer and I eventually got the courage to tell you how I felt.”
Maite raised a brow. She loved when Natalya said this story, but she was curious as to why it came up now. It felt so sudden?
“Remember how I asked you out on that first date?”
“The one I thought was just trade talks? The one where your siblings and Silvia followed us? Yes,” Maite laughed.
Natalya chuckled, “I was overjoyed when you agreed.”
She held up a small blue flower and set it in Maite’s hair, along with the others that adorned her. The flax flower, Natalya’s flower, seemed to tie the look together.
“I remember finally telling you my feelings and when you told me you felt the same way. I remember every moment we spent together, every date, every ‘I love you’. We broke past what was dictated to us as Belarus and Mexico, and I’m so happy we did.”
Maite leaned in closer, “And I remember every smile, every kiss, every hug, every bittersweet moment I wouldn’t change because that’s who we are.”
Maite wanted to reciprocate this. She felt a flutter in her heart. They’ve been together for what almost 5 years now, and she still felt a joy in her soul when she was in Natalya’s presence.
Natalya cupped a hand around Maite’s cheek, pulling her closer.
“And when you told me we were having a child, I was so happy. Words can’t describe how happy I am with our family. It made me think, ‘Yes. This is the one I want to be with. For the rest of my life, I want to be with her.’”
Maite’s heart pounded. Was... was this what she was thinking it would be?
Natalya stepped back, digging her hand into her pocket.
“I cherished every moment because I was afraid it would end. It didn’t. I cherish every moment with you, Maite. And I want to continue doing that.”
Natalya pulled out a small box, opening it to reveal a ring.
Maite gasped. This was happening.
Natalya said the words. She practiced them in her mind a million times and even then, she was shaking as she said it. The nervousness, the wait for the reply...
Maite was almost too shocked to say anything. Tears of joy filled her eyes. She wanted to fight them back but her emotions got the best of her. She jumped up, hand over mouth as she nodded.
“¡Sí! Yes!” she jumped forward and hugged Natalya, almost knocking them both down as she did.
Natalya was also crying from the joy. She placed the ring on Maite’s finger and pulled her in close for a kiss.
This was true. This was happening. The two were no longer girlfriends, but now fiancées, promised to each other for their forever.
(( I wrote this a long time ago (like back in December) and barely remembered it. I touched it up a bit again because, wow, I had a few typos.

Maite looked up from some paperwork. She flipped through the files and readjusted the folders for the seventh time. The words seemed like a foreign language to her, despite it being a language she understood well. Sleep deprivation had taken a toll on the nation, and forcing herself to stay awake through the world meeting was tedious. The meeting came to a close, and the minor chatter and small talk kept her alive for a bit longer; Talking about weekend plans and other personal things was more bearable than trade talks and other formal business.
“So yeah, we went on a date,” Silvia finished off her sentence with a smile and a slight adjustment in her chair.
Maite smiled and patted her cousin on the shoulder, “Aww. How cute. It seems Rusia really likes you. Who knew such a softie was under that rough exterior?”
Silvia giggled, “I don’t know, Maite. I think you just described yourself.”
“¡Ey!”
Silvia laughed and smiled again; it was a common thing for her.
All the other Latinos had their ears up, curious to know every detail about the date. Before much more could be said, everyone fell silent and had all eyes on Maite and Silvia. All the eyes prompted a worry in Maite, bringing up a familiar aggressiveness in her.
“Ay. Do you mind?!” Maite quickly turned around in her chair to avoid their gaze. Just like that, she saw the cause of the ruckus and hushed up before choice words escaped her mouth.
It was Belarus who had made her way to the Latinos’ side of the room. She carried a glare and a posture of defense, almost as if she was ready to get in a fight. She looked down at both the girls, but her glare seemed more directed at Silvia. Everyone else had backed away subtly- although not at the same time- and almost had their nails between their teeth. Murmurs and gossip stirred up within the crowd, everyone switching to Spanish to speak their minds clearly. All Maite could catch was their worry and fear.
“Uh-uh- ¡Hola, Natalya!” Silvia forced out and stood up from her chair, almost knocking it over in her rush. She was strangely tense.
She quickly stepped forward and tried hugging the Belarusian. Belarus only stood back and put a hand in between the both of them, clearly not entertained by the action. Silvia laughed nervously and rubbed her hand on the back of her neck, possibly to get rid of the cold sweat.
Maite stood up as well, lifting one of her hands to clamp on her other arm: A nervous tick. It wasn’t that Belarus- or Natalya, now to Maite’s knowledge- had made her uneasy; it was the fact that she hardly knew this woman and that she wasn’t in the mood to befriend another nation today. She dreaded a conversation between them. Natalya was fairly new to the world meeting setting, given that she was newly independent from the Soviet Union, but even that wasn’t enough to stir Maite into a befriending mood.
“I’ll leave you two to talk alone,” Maite calmly said.
She left quickly to get some coffee, avoiding everyone else who were glued to their seats and guarding over Silvia with a watchful eye.
“Maite!” a familiar man exclaimed as he rushed over to Maite, “How could you leave Silvia alone! Belarus could freaking kill her!”
Maite sighed and sneered, “Ay, Alfredo. Calm the hell down and stop being dramatic! She won’t kill her??? If Silvia can handle Rusia, she can handle... Belarus?”
She put her hand up to her chin, trying to remember why Belarus was such a big deal. Everyone seemed to fear her for some reason. Alfred soon pulled her out of that thought.
“You know how Belarus is!” he blabbered.
“No. No, I don’t.”
“Well...”
“Well?”
“She’s kinda... crazy. Me and her go way back, so I should know. She held a knife up to my throat once. She’s not very nice. And! If she’s anything like her brother, I would be careful if I were you,” Alfred continued on and on while Maite zoned out on him. She grabbed a styrofoam cup and poured coffee into it.
All she could hear from everyone were complaints and gossip about how “dangerous” Natalya was. As she counted more spoonfuls of sugar, she thought about how familiar Natalya sounded to her.
“They’re not even giving her a chance,” Maite thought, “Don’t I know that feeling...”
She glanced back at the woman in question. Natalya had made her way back to her side of the room. She had sat down next to another woman, whose short hair was partially pinned back with hair pins. Maite glanced at the country tag that sat on their table, seeing “Ukraine” and the Ukrainian flag plastered on it.
A thought loomed onto Maite and before long, the lightbulb was on. Within seconds, she began pouring another cup of coffee and gathered various packets of sugar and creamer. She made her way back to where her region sat. Her original plans to avoid making a new friend had completely gone out the window.
“Hold on, Silvia,” Maite gleefully murmured, “I’ll be right back!”
“Wait- what?” Silvia asked but her voice trailed off as Maite went further away.
She treaded forth and made her way to where the Europeans gathered, greeting her way through the tables and countries. She was on a mission to set things right, to make up for the rude welcome by her region. While everyone else backed off, Maite made the journey to personally greet her.
She carefully placed the coffee cup and packets of sugar and creamer down in front of the Natalya. Maite’s smile warmed Natalya up more than the coffee ever could.
“¡Hola, Bielorrusia!” Maite greeted her.
Natalya looked up, hand on her chin from an apparent disinterest. However, the disinterest faded as she met Maite’s eyes. Her glare had faded into a look of confusion.
“Hello?...”
“I’m Mexico!” Maite introduced herself.
“I just wanted to apologize for the way my... region has been. They’re... not very warm with the others... They rather gossip within themselves than crawl out from under their rocks and actually socialize with the other continents!” Maite laughed, dragging everyone under the bus as a joke. It wasn’t the most tasteful of humor but this was becoming common for her to use.
Natalya sighed, “I don’t really care about them... I’m not one to worry about minimal things like greetings.”
“Oh...” Maite frowned a bit. For a second, she felt like this interaction was unnecessary. But damned if she didn’t try more, “Well, I brought you this coffee anyways. I wasn’t very sure how you like your coffee, so I just brought the sugar and creamer on its own.”
Natalya was almost too shocked to say anything but managed to speak her gratitude, “Thank you...”
“So...” Maite trailed off for a second. How to continue this conversation? “Boring meeting, huh?”
“Yeah...”
.
.
.
As the conversation carried on, Ukraine had abandoned her spot to leave the two to talk in more privacy, surrendering her seat over to Maite. For the past thirty minutes, small talk evolved into something more meaningful.
“I guess everyone thinks I’m just threatening,” Natalya ranted, “Most of them have never personally met me, but I suppose people like sticking to made-up stories than putting the effort to truly meet someone.”
“Oh. I get it. Believe it or not, I used to be in the same boat,” Maite sighed and leaned back in her chair, “Not too long ago, I was considered the ‘dangerous’ and ‘unapproachable’ one, too.”
“Oh?”
“Yeah. I suppose it was understandable, given my... history... but it doesn’t change the fact that I wanted another chance. Then again... I wasn’t very open to reconnecting with anyone...”
Natalya nodded and inched her chair closer to Maite, “Back then, I wasn’t very kind either, so I can see why everyone would rather stay away from me. Besides, your region has some old... acquaintances of mine that don’t like me very much.”
“Really?”
“Yes. Things fell apart and people began disliking each other. But that’s how things work, no?”
“Yeah...” Maite frowned and dipped further into her chair. The frowned left as quickly as it arrived, “But that doesn’t mean we have to abide by that.”
Natalya’s eyes widen. We? She was going to say something before she was interrupted.
“¡Maite!” A familiar voice called out, “Come on! ¡Ya nos vamos!”
Maite responded back, “¡Ahí voy, Silvia!”
She stood up quickly but turned around, “I’m sorry, but I have to go now. Hopefully I’ll see you here next time. I enjoy talking to you.”
“Y-you do?” Natalya stammered as she slightly stood up.
“Yes!” Maite exclaimed, “I hope to see you soon. ¡Adiós, Natalya!”
She hurried off to join her cousin, leaving Natalya in a blushing mess. “Adiós, Natalya” echoed in the her head. The usage of human names was reserved for countries who were close and the fact that Mexico- or rather Maite, now to Natalya’s knowledge- had used her human name threw her off guard. She wasn’t offended by the rushed informality but was rather content with it.
Perhaps a new friend could be made.
Natalya brushed a stray strand of hair behind her ear and played with her thumbs. The feeling in her stomach, the warmth in her cheeks, the happiness she felt when she remembered the interaction; all of these reactions brought an emotion she thought was long gone.
She glanced up from her desk. Her eyes caught one last look of Maite as she left the conference room. The sway of her hair, the final look from Maite as well, her smile as she waved at Natalya one last time. This? This was real.
Natalya smiled.
Perhaps Maite could become more than just a friend.
