summary: Lydia comforts Stiles after a nightmare (◡‿◡✿)

an: for bellarkeish, sorry it took so long!!

The nightmares still haunted him, sometimes he still had trouble distinguishing dream from reality, but for the most part, he was better. But there were good days and bad days. 

He always saw Allison in his dream. He always felt the responsibility of her death. Scott and Lydia always hated him for it, too. But during every nightmare, he was there, since he wasn't in reality. Watching her body fall to the ground as Lydia and Scott raced to her. From what he was told, Lydia stayed with his unconscious body, sobbing on his shoulder while Scott held Allison and said their goodbyes. He could understand why Lydia's legs gave-out and she sunk to the ground, and he could understand Scott racing to try to save her. He couldn't understand why either one of them ever forgave him though.

He sprung up from bed, his heart racing a million miles per minute as he tried to get the picture of Allison's body falling to the ground out of his head. He didn't even notice the other person lying in his bed until she spoke up.

"Stiles?" She asked, sitting up next to him now, her features scrunching with worry. "Are you okay? What happened?"

Stiles took a deep breath, "A nightmare." He mumbled, causing her to put a hand on his shoulder for comfort.

"Want to talk about it?" She asked gently, looking up at him. Stiles shook his head, still trying to get his heart-rate to a normal speed before it finally caught up to him. "Lydia?" He asked, turning to face her.

"Yeah?" She replied, her features becoming worried again when Stiles didn't reply, but instead got out of bed and started mumbling something and pacing.

"Stiles? Are you okay?" She stood with him now as he began pacing and she could just hear what he was muttering.

"It's just a dream. It's just a dream." He chanted to himself, causing Lydia's eyebrows to knit together in confusion until she remembered his problem before the nogitsune. He couldn't tell apart dreams from reality.

"Stiles," She tried again. "you're not dreaming." She came closer to the panicking brown eyed boy. "This is real." Stiles shook his head and continued repeating his phrase to himself as Lydia stood in front of him, putting a stop to his pacing. "Stiles," She racked her brain until something came to her. "Do you know how to tell when you're dreaming or not?" She asked slowly.

"You-you count your fingers." He answered in a small voice. "People have extra fingers in dreams."

"Right, right!" Lydia took his hand now, "Count your fingers."

She waited patiently in front of him, still worrying as Stiles counted all 10 of his fingers. "This is real." He mumbled, looking at Lydia now. "You're real."

"Of course I'm real," She looked up at him for a moment before wrapping her arms around him in a hug, which, after he digested the fact this was reality, he gladly accepted and wrapped his arms around her, too. "Do you want to go back to bed?" She asked gently again, unsure if he wanted to talk first or not.

"Sure," He nodded repeatedly, unwrapping himself from her but still holding her hand as they made their way back to bed.

They got situated in their own way, Stiles had his pillow while Lydia (effortlessly) fluffed her own pillows before she finally lied down and faced him. "Are you okay?" She asked, the worry still etched on her face but she wasn't pushing it by asking him what had happened.

"Yeah," He swallowed and it was pretty apparent that it was a lie. Lydia nodded for a minute before moving closer to him, wrapping her arms around his middle while she rested her head on his chest, doing whatever she could to comfort him. Stiles couldn't help the small smile that crept onto his face while he gladly welcomed her into his arms.

She didn't pressure him or demand to know what had happened and that honestly made Stiles feel worse because he could feel her worry coming off in waves. He sighed, enjoying the silence for a minute. "The reason I freaked out back there was-"

"You don't have to talk about it if you don't want to." Lydia assured him, not moving her head from his chest.

"But you're right, it'll help." He explained, then took a deep breath. "The reason was because I dealt with a very similar situation with the nogitsune."

"How so?" She asked, now tilting her head up to look at him.

"Well, I was dreaming. I was having a dream within a dream, kind of thing. And I couldn't really move or anything."

"Sleep Paralysis?" Lydia asked, recalling the day at school when he explained this sort of thing, just not in as much detail.

Stiles nodded, "Yeah, I think. I don't know, I was kind of trapped in a locker." He shook his head, "But I woke up, or thought I woke up, and you were there."

Lydia raised an eyebrow, "Did I do something? Say something?"

"No," He shook his head, "you were just there like you were tonight. And you were trying to calm me down from the nightmare, and it was nice until I wondered what the hell you were doing here and that's when some more...complicated things happened." Lydia felt Stiles involuntarily shutter as he relived it. "And it was just a dream, so when you were here tonight I just thought..."

"It was just another dream." Lydia finished, not sure if she felt more heartbroken or pissed off at the nogitsune for mocking Stiles' crush on her in a dream form. "Stiles, you never have to deal with that again." She was sitting up now, looking at him straight in the eyes. "I'm always going to be here for you, not just in a dream. But here, in reality." She stared at him to let him know she was serious.

Stiles nodded, "I love you Lydia."

He said it softly but it still brought a smile to Lydia's face and made her heartbeat faster, like every other time he said it. "I love you too, Stiles." She kissed him for a moment, before pulling away to get back into her previous position. She did everything she could to comfort him, having no idea how much she helped just due to her presence. She fell asleep after a few minutes while it took Stiles a little longer, as it always did after he had a nightmare, but he didn't mind because he got to enjoy just holding Lydia for a while before drifting off.

Maybe there was a tiny part of his subconscious that thought that it was another dream within a dream sort of thing, despite the fact he had the correct number of fingers. He all of his doubt when away when he awoke in the morning for find Lydia's arms still wrapped around him, sleeping peacefully on his chest, in the exact same position she was in when they fell asleep.
