First time exploring Richmond: April 5-7, 2013
I have lived in Richmond for almost 2 years now and I still no next to nothing about the area. I never have time or am in town long enough to go exploring and sight seeing. I had great company with me while I was seeing some of the popular sites (@pcoyne)
First Fridays Art Walk- Broad Street This is an artwalk on steroids. Okay not really, but it wasn't your typical museum type artshow. Lots of small galleries up and down Broad Street that you could pop into. Music, drinks, fire jugglers, you name it it was happening. It was really cool to see all the local talent, and to see different types of art I may not normally engage myself with. Lots of abstract and we even popped into a wood sculpture exhibit. It was really neat all around.
Brown's Island- I have actually been here before I think, but a little tipsy. The Folk Fest in October takes over the area and I think at one point I wandered over here. This time there was a bunch of history plaques and a nice civil war set up. We also walked along the canal too.
Legends Brewery- Local Richmond beer company. Beautifully set on the other side of the water looking at the city. A little warmer and less wind and there would have been no complaints. The booze and food were really good. Definitely worth the hop over the bridge to check it out.
Belle Aisle- I was trying to get here when I was at Brown's Island but I got a little lost. It was SO CLOSE to where I was as well. This little island is beautiful. GREAT views and an awesome nature hike. There's the water and rocks and plenty of stopping points. We also sat overlooking the Quarry and it was breathtaking when the sun went down. The train whistle in the distance was also really neat.
It makes me really sad it took me so long to take the time to explore this great city. There is so much to do, I vow to make more time before I have to leave!
