I recently visited the wonderful Bellevue hotel, built in 1897 by the Visionary Henry Plant, who had built an enormous railroad and steamship network across the South that came to be known as the Plant System. Later on 1905 he built the “Cartier” building in New York, 5th Avenue. So how did this building become “The most elegant jewelry store in the United States;Cartier on 5th avenue “!? Years later Plant’s son would marry Maisie Plant , who fell in love with a a double strand of enormous, natural South Sea pearls; worth $1 million dollars. So in 1917 Plant sold the building to the brothers Pier and Louis Cartier for $100 dollars plus other valuable considerations (the necklace) The original portrait of Maisie wearing the necklace is today inside Cartier’s building. A copy is in the cafeteria in the Bellevue inn in Florida. the exterior of the building was not altered in any way and the interior went virtually untouched, with the exception of a refurbishment in 2000-2001. The building has landmark status in New York City and still looks substantially as it did when Cartier acquired it. #newyorkcity #cartier #belleviewinn #henryplant #plantsystem (at Cartier) https://www.instagram.com/p/ByGIGbpBkWS/?igshid=19ybcrukqckd8
