What do you think Astoria’s sense of humour would be like? Or Draco’s for that matter?
Astoria is definitely the kind of person who starts giggling halfway through telling a joke, and you’ll probably find yourself giggling with her before she’s even reached the punchline because that’s the effect she has on everyone around her—her joy is contagious. She likes making people laugh and she doesn’t take herself (or life in general) too seriously, so she can joke about pretty much anything. She gently teases people, she’s always got a witty remark or two ready… and she loves puns. You might think she’s got a very sophisticated sense of humour, but no, this girl is all about puns, really bad puns, the kind that make you groan out loud while she cracks up. Daphne has to put up with them during their childhood and Hogwarts years (not that she minds, since she’s just as bad), and then it’s Draco’s turn. He’s not the biggest fan of puns and he’ll pretend to be exasperated by them (which is the biggest lie of all time because literally everything Astoria does is endearing), and that only encourages her to make them even more ridiculous. And then Scorpius comes along and he’s a bright little ray of sunshine who’s delighted by absolutely everything, so of course he thinks Mama’s lame jokes are the best thing ever. He and Astoria are a force to be reckoned with and they’re constantly trying to outdo each other, so the sillier side of Scorpius’ humour can be traced back to that. Engorgimpressed is something Astoria would have been proud of.
(I will also point out that Astoria’s sense of humour can be a bit dark sometimes—she’ll make little jokes about her blood curse every now and then because it’s how she chooses to deal with it, and most people don’t know how to react to them. But that’s slightly angsty and we’re not going to talk about it now.)
Draco, on the other hand, is more reserved. Even though he’s an idiotic little show-off during his Hogwarts years and messes around because he knows it will get him the attention he wants (let us not forget his drama queen tendencies and Dementor impressions, please), he calms down as he gets older. He changes and matures a lot after the war, and by the time he’s comfortable in his own skin again his sense of humour isn’t as obnoxious as it used to be, or nonexistent like Lucius’ (he doesn’t have a sense of humour, he’s just vicious, and that never came naturally to Draco). It just becomes very, very subtle.
And I have to point out that Draco doesn’t have the warmest sense of humour in the world. He’s perfected the deadpan delivery and turned sarcasm into an art form, so he can come across as very cold or dry if you don’t know that he’s joking. His humour reflects what he’s like: clever, but a little bit too arrogant and sharp sometimes. While Scorpius is growing up he starts to feel slightly self-conscious because he knows he can’t be as bubbly as Astoria, who can easily make Scorpius giggle, but of course that’s a silly thing to worry about: Scorpius understands his father perfectly and he even gets part of his sense of humour from him (because yes, Scorpius is a pun-loving dork like his mum, but his dad taught him well and the only people who can beat him at sarcasm are Albus and Draco himself). And it’s a two-way thing: having Scorpius softens Draco up over the years, and he eventually discovers the glorious world of puns (Astoria’s ecstatic, naturally) and starts cracking the occasional joke. By the time Albus and Scorpius are dating/engaged he’s unstoppable and will not hesitate to poke fun at his own son, much to Albus’ delight.
This family makes me feel all of the feelings, honestly. Don’t you just love the fact that the Malfoys love each other so much and bring out the best in each other? Scorpius is equally close to both his parents and they’ve both influenced him in their own way, and he wouldn’t be the Scorpius we know and love without those little hints of Draco and Astoria. They’re such a sweet, tight-knit family, and that’s why all three of them are such a joy to write ❤️
