Winter in Belmontas, Lithuania
25 Sep 2021
I went on the mother of all walks today. It wasn’t my initial intention, but after a short stroll left me feeling unsatisfied I just sorta kept going, and before I knew it I had pulled a Forrest Gump and gone halfway around the country (slight exaggeration). Plus, given that it was my last day of freedom in this wondrous place I felt compelled to make the most of it.
I wandered past a few more churches and then headed off towards a viewpoint that didn’t seem too far away (it was). I tried following the road that Google Maps said I could, but was forced to go off-road through the forest for a while. I quite enjoyed my ramble through the woods, and even though I probably didn’t take the most efficient route I was happy enough heading in the general direction and seeing what I saw.
The viewpoint did not disappoint, by which time I thought ‘in for a penny in for a Euro’, and went to Belmontas, a tiny tucked-away suburb which required some more woodland wandering. There were numerous intriguing spots along the way but I decided not to stop too long at any of them, as I was starting to feel that there was a good chance I might not make it home before night fell! Belmontas is now a tourist attraction - and popular wedding venue judging by what I saw - it’s not hard to see why, is it?
I finally decided I’d had enough and walked back, which had plenty more lovely views to take in on the way. By the time I returned to HQ I had covered 18km in roughly 4h15! I well and truly maximised my last day off, and that feeling of success trumped any weariness I might have had, so much so that I rounded my total up to 20km by going for dinner with DJ in the evening. We went to an Italian place where the food was delicious but too small to fully satisfy either of us, so we went to Uncle Sam’s again for some wings n’ shrimp. And maybe another cocktail.
