ALIEN LANDSCAPES by Ben Duax
"Three new paintings of Manhattan and one of the country. In sourcing the images I augmented plein air painting with Google and Yahoo street view . I was able to compare my live experience with the mediated gaze of years of data stored online. In the case of the Lexington Avenue painting, the sort of thought bubble on top is from a napkin drawing I did inside that specific McDonald’s. My goal was to use landscape painting as a kind of journalism. The Western Unions as a subject might be familiar to any one in need of financial liquidity."
