It's possible to actually fall in love with fictional characters. Not always the kind of love that makes you lose all concentration when you hear their name, a smile creep across your face whenever you think about them, their names written in squiggles and hearts all over your notebook. Sometimes it's the kind that makes you cry when you see them, losing sleep imagining them next to you, clutching the blankets and staring at the wall, saying their name when you wish they were there to experience something with you, seeing them for a split second in the hall but realizing that it's just some other person. They're living so close to you, on the screen or page, in your mind, behind your decisions, but not quite with you. You cannot understand the emotional pain until you've fallen like this for a fictional character, because it's so much worse than falling for a tangible person. Don't make fun of fangirls/boys. Don't tell them it's just a story. Because it. Is. Not.
