Benjy doesn’t recall a lot from his childhood. At the age of four he was put into the foster care system, bouncing around from household to household. The unrest for a four year old child was tedious, questions about when you get to see your dog again or why can’t you go back to get your toys arose. Most of the answers to his tireless questionings ended in small frowns and pouts but he learned to adapt.
The one constant he could rely on was his brother. Born as a pair, second by six minutes, Benjy adored his brother Jared. Besides finding ways to irritate him, he got used to the idea of sharing quickly. Joint birthdays, shared wardrobes, shared toys. There wasn’t a lot that was his, it was always his and Jared’s possessions that were carried in a black trash bag. House-hopping eventually became tiresome. A new family, a few sleepovers, a new school, a new town. He found the new starts daunting and the anxiety of having to go left him in fits of tears.
By nine years old, Benjy had sold himself on the idea that the only person he could trust in this big, wide world that didn’t want them, was his brother. He rarely left Jared’s side for fear of being torn apart. Jared was the older brother of the two and Benjy found comfort in leaning on him. So when a new family welcomed them in, he always stayed a shoulder-width beside his brother and watched with cautious eyes.
The Rose family weren’t like the other homes. Benjy found comfort in the cat that wandered the house with a jingling bell on her collar and slowly but surely he began to find his own confidence. Quiet glances across the room when he was occupied with helping making a cake and Jared was in the other room. A trust formed in those adults that made that Brooklyn apartment feel like home. That officially changed when they were invited to stay and be part of the Rose family one spring day after school. He’d asked them if they were sure at least several times before throwing his arms around his new father and mother.
As a teenager he went through the usual teething pains of high school. His interests always laid outside of the classroom. The local skatepark or Coney Island were where he gravitated towards. That or chasing his brother over the Brooklyn Bridge to run wild in the concret jungle of New York City. He took a leap of faith when the two found a fork in the road. He wanted to go down one road, one that saw four years in NYU studying Chemistry and Physics while his brother wanted to persue his interests. At first he’d been hesitant but after a night sat on the Brooklyn Bridge, the two parted ways.
Now. The world sees the younger of the two tackling adulthood. Managing jobs to meet rent and find a real sense of purpose in the world. He’s not sure which path he should be on or which road to walk down. Yet between odd jobs and a few local performances he’s quite content with his little life.
CONNECTIONS
JOSEPH and MAGGIE ROSE [Foster Mother and Father]: Family. Benjy has no other words for them. They were the people who took a chance on him and from cooking to fixing up old and pieces of hardware, they’ve really helped him find his feet and left him with one piece of knowledge. That he always has somewhere and someone to go to in this big world.
JARED ROSE [Older Twin]: Beaten in the race of life by approximately six minutes, Benjy idolises Jared. He’s been the one consistent part of his life and sometimes Benjy knows he can lean too heavily on him.
IRIS ROSE-BERRY [Cousin]: Being welcomed into the Rose family, Benjy wasn’t used to relying on other people. The idea that there was anyone in this world besides his brother was challenged. It took a while for him to grasp onto the idea of trust and Iris was one of the first to gain it. Whenever he has a chance, he’s down at The Cocoa River, offering to help out wherever he can and hang out with his friend.
Benjamin Rose is a good friend of mine who is also in the band Kat and the Hurricane. They created this acoustic piece and its really touching. Reminds us that even though there is violence all around us, we can still help one another.
