Berthoud, Colorado, Robert Adams, 1976
At the APGA annual conference, June 2 was field trip day. Our first stop: Northern Water.
Northern Water’s Conservation Gardens – Berthoud, CO
Tucked behind Northern Water’s Berthoud campus, the Conservation Gardens are a living showcase of waterwise landscaping for Colorado’s semiarid climate. The gardens highlight xeriscape principles—like smart irrigation, turf alternatives, and regionally adapted plants—all designed for homeowners, professionals, and educators alike.
A standout feature: the interactive C‑B T Project model, a miniature landscape with a Continental Divide and 12 reservoirs that tells the story of Colorado’s water infrastructure.
New demonstration areas added in 2025 spotlight resilient medians, pollinator corridors, low-maintenance natives, and sloped landscape solutions—complete with signage and design tips.
It’s an essential stop for anyone interested in sustainable gardening or learning how to landscape with less water and more intention.
