[ just for giggles ]
"Wait, he left? Did he actually leave? Oh, for crying out-- when did he leave! I've been hiding in this cupboard for half-a-bloody-day waiting for him to go! You'd think somebody would just, agh -- that's it. I'm done. Done with the cupboard--"
Clunk-clunk went a waggled handle fruitlessly against the interior of a cabinet door, wobbling it slightly open only to have gravity neatly shut it again, snuffing out a peek of blue light that strained to see.
"...staaaaarting to think this whole disengage-from-the-rail-into-a-cupboard plan needed another step before I, uh... did... exactly that."
Bloody Space Cores. The entire lot of them!
Nothing but shoddy bad luck.
"Hey. Hey. Guess what."
"Space..? What are you doing here?"
The core made no movements for about half a minute. After that, the game started and the ship moved for him.
Doug smiled like the proud “dad” he was.
"Oh. Oh. Okay. That's space game? Okay." The core started staring down the screen, not blinking.
"You can do it, Space."
The core waited a moment before asking, "Space game. How do you play space game? Play in space? Cover eyes? I wanna play space game."
"You use your mind. Try to hack into the game and control that little ship."
"S.. Space game? I wanna play space game! I like space games."
"Hopefully you’ll be better at it than I am."
Not only would this game keep him occupied, but also allow Doug to observe his ability to hack without stressing Space out over a proper test. He didn’t give the small android any controller with which to play.
"Okay. Okay. Gotta wait. Long time." Two seconds later, "...Long time over. Is it ready now?"
"No, Space. Do you want to play this - ah - virtual reality space simulator I found?” Doug held up a copy of Galaga.
