betOnfest was such an incredible experience this weekend with my little artist- in Stolpe near Angermünde outside of Berlin. We spent this holiday weekend in an old cement factory turned DIY cultural space. Nature is reclaiming the abandoned site, and artists are creating performances, installations, sound art, murals, comics and documentaries…and more. We had the wonderful opportunity to create sound recordings with Lottie Sebes, test things out with found random objects and make connections with artists from all over the world. This was quite a new experience for me, my own performative artist practice mostly being active pre-motherhood ( site-specific performative / photographic), and it was amazing, if exhausting (!) too, seeing it through my daughters never-stopping-to-explore eyes and wanting to get everyone involved in her play, and for her to learn from others about their art happening all around us. She talked about how much she saw bodies can become like a paintbrush, part of the art, and when we started to unpick this I realised I need to share my own artist self with her more, such as the blog I kept when I did a 3 week workshop/residency in an old salt mine in Austria a few years back inspired by Fluxus Art. Such a magical place in betOnest, a long weekend of nest building, bonfires, laughter, delicious food, typewriters clattering, burnt wood charcoal drawing, and plant identifying walks. Looking forward to going back and trying out some ideas, big concrete drums just asking to become something performative…am sure more will pop up as digest more!
