Chief Kwataine

"No woman should die giving birth."

I couldn’t agree more. But in many places around the world, making sure women have access to health care before, during, and after giving birth is largely seen as only the concern of women. That’s not the case in Chief Kwataine’s village in Malawi. Through the Safe Motherhood Initiative, Chief Kwataine is making maternal health everyone’s concern.

In the past, men in Chief Kwataine’s community would never talk about pregnancy or childbirth. Even a woman’s husband often didn’t know much about her health. But Chief Kwataine is changing that and encouraging open dialogue and education about these issues among everyone in his village. His leadership is saving mother’s lives, and it’s a great example of how men and boys can empower women to be healthy.
