the Germans were victorious because the mistakes they made were not as numerous or appalling as those made by the British!

I do not think the Commonwealth forces had any idea of the impact Crete had, as far as implications in the Mediterranean. If the Germans would have succeeded with fewer losses, we all know what the next stop would have been. Granted the Germans would have a hard time defending Cyprus. More or less Crete just slowed down the Allied bombing of the Ploiești oil-fields, but did not prevent it.
