Between Two Worlds || Lexie and Oz Chatzy
The previous night Lexie slept in, resulting in the near death of her current partner, Lucy. Luckily, the Wolf didn't get her, but it ruined something almost as important. With another Full Moon on it's way, how will Lexie calm down fast enough to be able to continue her training?
Lexie gripped the phone with her clammy hands, jaw clenched, and eyes squeezed shut. Don't cry. Don't cry. Don't cry. The only two words that were set on repeat in Lexie's mind to keep her from shedding tears. Tears were for the weak and crying never got anyone anywhere. "Oz," she quickly ran a hand over her face, wiping away any tears that might have escaped. "I-I-I..." Lexie fumbled with her words, not knowing exactly what to apologize for first. "I'm sorry." Her voice cracked in all the wrong places as the water works finally came. "I know I fucked up and disappointed you but I have a bigger problem to deal with. L-Lucy, sh-she had uh, sh-she had a necklace - a pretty damn important one and the fucking wolf stepped on it and I know all of this could've been prevented if I'd been responsible..." She began to pace, throwing her phone on to her cot and slamming a hand against the wall. "God, I was so selfish."
Oz listened silently, barely shifting as Lexie rambled. Salt tears cloyed the air far before they stained Lexie's cheeks, and Oz's eyebrows raised in sympathy, his eyes widening in half understanding. Lexie had been stupid, had endangered herself and her girlfriend. But then it wasn't like Oz could hand out judgement. He - the wolf - had tried to kill Willow more than once. Stepping forward, Oz scooped up the First Aid kit. Hell, it wasn't like he knew what he was doing, but it seemed obvious and easy. Lexie had lots of small cuts thanks to the Wolf, and Oz knew First Aid, if nothing else. "Breathe," he instructed, watching her as he opened the box. "Let it go." That was what Bay would say. "Fuck ups tend to follow fuck ups that aren't looked at calmly." Bit of Oz wisdom too, free of charge.
Lexie finished putting on the rest of her clothes, no need to look even more vulnerable than she already did. "She hung up on me," Lexie spoke through her teeth, mustering every ounce of strength to suppress another wave of tears. "So that must mean it's serious...right? The fucking wolf smashed it. The fucking wolf wanted sex. The /fucking/ wolf made this mess," Lexie sat down on the edge of her minuscule, rock hard cot, allowing Oz to doctor her up, wincing as he touched the more tender, open wounds. "How do you do it? How do you deal with it? How did you survive? Shit, how do you keep yourself from going completely insane," she smirked and shook her head back and forth while glancing down at the cuts and bruises that covered her scrawny legs.
Oz tilted his head slightly, applying pressure to a shoulder cut. Lexie had always had a way with words. That wasn't even sarcastic. Oz instantly understood what Lexie meant about the more primal urges of the wolf. He'd felt it similarily with Veruca, and had always been ashamed that it had been far stronger with her than with Willow. It was also entirely possible that in his memories this had become muddled by the Tara fiasco. "I must have a natural gift," he replied straightfaced, turning his eyes to meet hers, tinted with concern. The Wolf wanted to attack this Lucy, wanted to hurt it for what it did to Pack. But it could also sense the overwhelming attachment. "I've had my moments. I figure, the Wolf screwed up, time to clear up the mess. Like a pet, but less fun. So how do you propose we clear up?" After all, Oz's tried and tested methods... didn't test well.
Lexie bit down on the corner of her bottom lip, debating whether or not to just go after Lucy, demand the answers she desperately needed. But the last thing Lexie wanted to do is come off as the clingy girlfriend. "I'll just have to give her some space. There's not a whole lot I can do being in here, anyways," she gave a short shrug of her shoulders, wincing internally as she made the gashes reopen on the surface of her skin from such a mindless gesture. "But there will be more. Screw ups. From the wolf. No matter how hard I try, it's always wanting to do more destruction. To my life and others. And I don't know how to stop it..." Lexie glanced down to her hands that rested in her lap, breathing in deeply and exhaling slowly. "How have you not just thrown in the towel yet, Oz? How the hell do you find the strength to fight?" Her eyes lifted and found Oz's, willing the tears teasing at her her eyelashes to push themselves back down. Lexie was done shedding tears. She was done being weak. She was ready to be strong.
Oz nodded, admiring the emotional intelligence of Lexie's decision. "It'd just seem like you were trying to make yourself feel better," he replied, remembering a conversation between Willow and himself many moons ago. Many, many moons ago. Or just one, seeing as the moon was always the same moon. That was a ridiculous way to measure time, Oz decided. He tilted his head slightly, letting the acid smell of fear wash over him from Lexie, not absorbing any of it. "I know how to stop it," Oz replied simply, turning his head to the ceiling for a moment. "Teachers are supposed to teach what they know. So let me teach." Oz sighed deeply, flicking his eyes back to Lexie, taking in how pale her skin was, how untidy her hair, noticing the small shades of red around her eyes. "I did it for a girl. I maintained it for my benefit. You just need to find where your strength lies."
Lexie snapped her head up, eyes narrowed and lips slightly pursed. Oz did it for a girl. If Oz could do it, then Lexie could do it for the same reasons. But she didn't want Lucy to be her only motivation to keep the wolf at bay. Lexie also wanted to do this for herself, to be her own person, in her way, without the wolf butting in all the goddamn time. But there was something else wrong with this picture. "You did it for a girl?" Lexie's eyes fell to her lap once again, unsure about how to ask her next question. "Where um..." She rubbed the palms of hands anxiously against her knee caps before finally spitting it out. "Where is she? If you did all this for her... I-if you fought for her... Shouldn't you... Sh-shouldn't she... Um... Be with you?" Lexie peeked up at Oz through her eyelashes then quickly adverted her gaze once more, scared that she stirred up some unwanted emotions.
Oz hesitated at Lexie's question. Maggots infested the corners of his mind, creeping, crawling, gloating at his pain as they gnawed at the face of the woman he loved. Oz pushed it away, trying not to let Lexie see the clouds behind his eyes. He clasped his hands together, shrugged slightly. "She turned out to gay," he replied in a deadpan, "I doubt that'll be a problem for you, if that's any consolation." Then there was the second girl, woman, with her scent like spices, herbs, strength, and motherly protectiveness. It was more than odd that had a scent, but Oz had never really minded it. He could feel his face darken again, considering his more recent memories. "Another consolation: If both you and the wolf want to be with her, it's always a good sign."
Lexie couldn't help but see the obvious distress splashed across Oz's face along with sensing the sorrow radiating off of his vessel, it was pretty tough to ignore and now she was mentally kicking herself for ever making Oz rekindle with those horrid memories. "I'm sorry," she whispered inaudibly but knew that Oz was able to make out her words clearly. "That must really... That must've been tough. I didn't mean-" Lexie cut herself off, refusing to twist the knife more than she already had and quickly changing the subject. "How do you know?" She cleared her throat while straightening out her spine, working out any kinks that had been embedded within her muscles. "How do you if the wolf wants the same thing you do?"
Oz smiled slightly, shaking his head. "Water under the bridge, now. No big deal. Sailing solo seems to suit," Except it didn't. Oz would be the first to admit that he really loved being with people. It was hard to choose to be alone. Then again, everyone he had ever gone out with had ended up in a very bad place. At her next question, he raised an eyebrow at Lexie. The evidence was in the room, the smell of strong hormones under the wooden scent of Wolf. "You can tell."
Lexie Lexie scooted towards the edge of the bed with her elbows propped up on her boney knees before letting her face fall into the palm of her hands briefly. "I don't wanna screw this up, Oz." Her words were muffled but audible. Lexie would rather die a thousand deaths before allowing the wolf to get the opportunity to harm Lucy. Lucy, the very girl who could very well be the love of her life. "I don't want the wolf anywhere near her. Not after last night. Not ever." Lexie slid her hands down her damp face and across her neck as she stared at the blank wall across the room. Memories from the previous night flooded into her head and a pool of warmth began to form around her sternum, creating a slight smirk across Lexie's pale silhouette. She wouldn't trade those memories for the world. "But you're right about one thing," she twisted her neck to look over at the man that sat beside her. "We, meaning the wolf and I /both/ want Lucy." They both /needed/ Lucy.
Oz leant in slightly to hear what Lexie was saying. If only the Wolf had given him advanced hearing too, it would have been so useful in senior year. Oz had always done very well in the doctor's hearing tests, but it still would have been a useful superpower to have. Although he hesitated to show it, he understood what Lexie was saying perfectly. Oz had been desperate to hide the wolf side of himself, to not let anyone else know how much it hurt, how scary it was. Hadn't wanted anyone in danger. Oz had dealt by bottling it up; he expected that Lexie would suit another technique better. Now, of course, he understood that although he and the Wolf were different entities, it was impossible for one to exist without the other, and both affected the other. No matter how much any of them tried to protect their loved ones from the Wolf, it never worked. Without allowing emotion to flicker on his face, Oz decided to let Lexie live that dream. She would figure it out eventually, of course. But in that moment Oz recognised he needed to support his student, not put her down. "Just the one thing?" He asked, a slightly teasing tone to his voice. So it sounded a little forced. He hadn't perfected it yet.
Lexie felt a genuine smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. Leave it to Oz to lighten the mood. "Okay maybe you're right about other things..." Lexie bit down on her bottom to suppress an even wider grin but failed to keep it from surfacing. "Okay you're right about /everything./" A soft chuckle fell from Lexie's thin pair of lips while she tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear. "Thanks," she said with absolute gratitude lacing her voice. "For you know... Pretty much everything. I don't know what I'd do without you... I don't /want/ to know... Where I am now is where I wanna be." And nothing was going to change that. Oz raised an eyebrow towards Lexie. "So I take it this means you might just follow my advice?" he asked, pointedly looking at the traces of wolf around the room. Turning them back to Lexie, Oz advised "Let Lucy go. Tonight is a chance to resist, again." He hesitated before adding, "Put the thoughts in a helium balloon, and let the balloon go." That was the image Oz had always used to help with his own meditation. It was one of his more favourite images, and did the job very well. He clapped his hands against his knees, "How are you supposed to start?"
Lexie nodded in agreement. She would let Lucy go and deal with things on her own. She was a big girl. She didn't need Lexie following her around like a little puppy dog whenever a series of unfortunate events occurred. "Right," Lexie stood up and pulled on one of her vintage concert tshirts, which in her opinion, never went out of style. "Exercises." But it was then that a starving sensation rippled through her lower abdomen. "Um... You think maybe we can feed the wolf first?" She asked with a tinge of playfulness in her voice, only half joking about the wolf part.
Oz nodded, seeing Lexie straighten her back and her determination shine out, as if she'd taken her energy and decided to put it on display, as opposed to hide it behind unnoticed fears of monsters under the bed and on it. He raised his eyebrows in surprise at Lexie's next suggestion. Although too quiet to admit it, Oz had been hungry since four o'clock in the morning, but hadn't wanted to leave Lexie, not when so much had seemingly gone wrong the night before. Oz remembered the couple of nights he'd woken up alone after the Wolf had invaded his body, how keenly he had felt the silence and the lack of pack. Now Lexie had him, there was no chance he was subjecting her to that. "Food's good. You coming or am I bringing?"
Lexie yanked on a pair of jeans and slipped her feet into a pair of converse before running a brush through her hair, getting all the knots out to appear somewhat decent while they were in public. "Let's go out. I don't wanna be in here longer than I need to be," she grabbed her phone off of the cot and shoved it into her back pocket, just in case Lucy decided to call or text her back. "Besides. I could use some fresh air." Lexie finished getting ready by sliding on a pair of black sunglasses up the bridge of her nose, indicating that she done and wanted nothing more than to blow this joint. And that's exactly what they did. Oz escorted her out of slayer headquarters and Lexie couldn't be that she was about indulge in some real food. But more than that, she was relieved to be getting a second chance and showing Oz that his advice was the best thing a wolf could ask for.
