Stolen Goat Climb & Conquer Deep Winter Bib Tights - Product Review

As someone who suffers from the cold pretty badly, any hint of a nearing zero degree ride would have me hopping on the indoor bike and selecting a nice ride in Mallorca or something. However, given the obvious benefits of getting outdoors, even on those cold cold days, I went in search of some winter bib tights that could see me through some of the colder days on the bike.

The Climb & Conquer Deep Winter Bib Tights by Stolen Goat are pretty much fit for purpose in that regard. With dense fabric layers they are noticeably more padded than regular bib tights.

Because of this extra layering these bib tights don't size up like normal bib tights. Normally I'd be a Medium (I'm a 31/2 inch waist, 32 leg, and 40 inch chest) for the other Stolen Goat bib tights, but with this Climb & Conquer range I'm fitting an XL.

Stolen Goat are very helpful though so if you have any concerns about sizing then just reach out to them and they can help you. It was their guidance that got me to the XL for these bib tights.

What was immediately evident with these tights is the quality of the garment, from the feel of the exterior lycra and the interior thermal layer, to the stitching and all round design.

The chamois is sumptuous and generous, providing a good coverage area and a deep cushioning feel.

The stitching is clean and neat and you get the sense that this product is going to endure a fair amount of wear.

There are heel straps to make sure the tights remain true and don't ride up the leg.

And reflective sections on both legs add additional visibility to the tights.

Something I didn't pick up in my initial assessment was that there's a patch on the backside of the bib tights around the lower back. This acts like a grip surface and it stops your jersey from riding up. At least this is what I think it is and I like it. My top gripped to the tights and stayed firm throughout my ride. I haven't seen that feature before.

My first ride, a 40k mixed surface ride was a great success. The bib tights were very comfortable. The chamois performed well throughout, regardless of the terrain and there was no signs of any rubbing of seams anywhere.

The tights kept my legs warm through the ride which covered temperatures from around freezing to about 4 degrees, with the wind-chill taking it down a couple of degrees at times too. What was interesting was that the tights kept me warm when it was very cold, but they didn't overheat as things warmed up. They seems to self-regulate and keep everything just really nice and comfortable.

It didn't rain on my ride, but the video shows the impact of spraying a hose on the tights, and as you'd expect the water was repelled and just ran off.

In terms of the fit, there's a chance that I could just about squeeze into a Large in this range, but I think it would be a squeeze, and I actually found the XL's to be well fitted without being overly compressive. However, it is defintiely worth checking with the folks at Stolen Goat if you have any queries on sizing.

Summary

Overall I could not be happier with these bib tights. They are the first product I have tried from the Stolen Goat range and they are excellent in every aspect. For me they feel like, and perform a high end product, but without the associated price tag. I'll be riding them over the next few months and hopefully putting some decent mileage in to really test them and will give an update on continued performance, but honestly, I cannot imagine there'll be anything more to say that my initial review hasn't said.

  Things have come on a long way for Morvélo since they sold their first few printed t-shirts at a local bike race in the summer of 2009 – there’s always been a bold design ethos, drawing influences from all forms of cycling and popular culture, and the current Autumn/Winter collection pops with colour. The technical nature of the fabrics have greatly improved with time too, and this brings me neatly to the Stormshield bib-tights.

  Morvélo have kindly sent me their Stealth version of the Stormshield bib-tights for test and review, ‘Stealth’ being all black, of course. Other designs in the Stormshield range include thigh and backside panels; Blaze – bright yellow with black ‘MV’ logo; Prisma – charcoal grey with white flashes; Vestiario – again charcoal grey but flecked with small crosses; and finally the Winter Attack – a random pattern of grey geometric shapes reminiscent of 2nd World War Dazzle Ships and the cover of the OMD album of the same name.

  The Stormshield Bib tights are pitched for winter riding where the weather turns ugly, but you still want to get out and ride – thermal with wet weather protection the tights are constructed with the Italian M.I.T.I Super Roubaix fleeced backed fabric panels, designed to keep heat in but allow sweat to evaporated though the micro-fibre weave. It’s a 3 ply technical fabric that provides additional windproofing and water resistance.

  Panelled construction with flat lock stitching for fit and comfort, StormShield water repellence, 3 ply membrane waterproof panels, wind block panels on the front of the legs, brushed fleece-back straps for maximum insulation, high waist and front zip with puller and an Italian Dolomiti dual layer chamois, and the addition of thermal soft foot loops stop water and wind encroaching: All of that sounds like the perfect winter bib tights for comfort and weather proofing to see you through the cold, dark months.
