2:30 Kurt mentions my dad's band Redd Kross and my friend Bill Bartell who passed a little over a year ago. Bill had been one of my dad's best friends for decades as well as an uncle figure to me since birth. Seeing him talked about so fondly by Kurt brings back so many great memories. I think about Bill every day and truly believe he is watching over me. RIP Bill Bartell.
Today is my friend Bill's birthday. His band, White Flag, was one of my first introductions to punk.
He recorded this in Holland with Ken Stringfellow of the Posies (Bill was obsessed with Ken and loved him dearly). Dido came out with a song called White Flag and the band was now pushed into obscurity if you try to google them. Naturally, Bill wanted to write a song called Dido. They got everyone in the room to write one line and Ken sang the results.
The week after his death, I was in shock. I cried a lot. My grandma listened to the radio every morning while I got ready for school and whaddya know? White Flag by Dido came on almost every morning for a month.
That guy was a genius. He was an annoying asshole but he was a fucking genius.
When I heard the news that Bill Bartell had died, I felt like I’d been kicked in the guts. I don’t think I’ll ever get used to a world without him in it. I first met Bill in 1994, when White Flag played a show in New Orleans. The exact date and location escapes me (but no doubt, Bill, with his insanely proficient memory would remember). I went with a friend and we both wore Redd Kross T-shirts in an attempt to “impress” him. Haha, if only I had known. ...

We lost an amazing person today.
I can't believe that Bill Bartell is no longer with us. There will be never be another one like him and I'll miss him forever.
