Back in the late 90s I got wise to Ornette Coleman and his harmolodic phase; a concept that is equal parts avant-garde jazz with an attitude that is punk as hell, and influenced a lot of great artists, mostly in NYC, who pushed an immense number of boundaries. Our friend @culturaloffering breaks the sad news that pioneering guitarist James Blood Ulmer died.
If you were tuned into the emerging music scene of the 70’s and 80’s when the future of music appeared to be an exhilarating combination of funk, pioneering hip hop like that from DJ Kool Herc and Africa Bombaataa; and unconventional jazz, Ulmer’s name was one you passed around like a secret passcode to the club. Sorta like dropping Big Star into a conversation a block or two away from this scene.
I hadn’t thought of Ulmer for years and I’m kinda embarrassed to admit that. He left some good stuff behind. Dig in.
Low Life, Peter Brötzmann and Bill Laswell (1987)
In 1986 Peter Brötzmann released a live album as part of a group called Last Exit, which also featured Sonny Sharrock, Bill Laswell and Ronald Shannon Jackson. You’d probably call that release rock, though in its absolute loosest, noisiest sense. Brötzmann and Laswell’s follow-up, however, is very much not rock. Low Life is even less structurally and instrumentally bound, most interesting in its soundtrack-esque approach to atmosphere – the closest I’ve ever heard to Brötzmann making ‘mood music’.
