Show at Billy's Lounge: Cancelled

The Battle of the Bands at Billy's Lounge in Grand Rapids, MI has ultimately been cancelled, after being pushed back to January 11th, 2014. Because it's so far away from our home town, making it very hard for our fans to make it out to the show to support us, we decided to opt out of the Battle. We were not about to ask our friends, family, and fans to drive two to three hours away from home and stay there all day to give us the best chance of winning. However, the same people who are running that battle in Grand Rapids are going to be hosting one in Detroit, and we may be entering that one. Stay tuned for information as it unfolds! Thank you to all of our fans that have been supporting us, you have no idea how much we appreciate each and every one of you! Hope to see you soon!

Due to miscommunication between the band and the booking party, our show at Billy's Lounge in Grand Rapids, MI has been rescheduled for January 11th, 2014. Last night I went to Billy's Lounge to see the band Quadrophonic because a friend of mine plays in the band. Well due to my job I showed up and their set was over. The next band was a bluegrass band (usually not my cup of tea) and since I already paid to get in the show I had it in my mind I was going to enjoy the show (I was also with cool friends). The bands first song was a rendition of Swing Low, Sweet Chariot. 

About halfway through their set an older lady comes up to me and says "no disrespect, it's weird that you enjoy this music" and that I "stand out". I knew I was one of three black people at the show and the only one with actual dark skin, so for her to say that it made me slightly angry. Also using the disclaimer "no disrespect" before you say something usually means that you are going to say something totally disrespectful.

I wanted to tell her that the color of my skin does not dictate the type of music I listen to. I also wanted to tell her that Swing Low, Sweet Chariot is a NEGRO spiritual. Instead I smiled and left it at that. The show was good. I had a good time. No disrespect to old dumb people.
