tbh it's really funny jeralt raises his son like that, they don't follow the church, live in the woods and have no idea about their own ages the eisners are disasters! i'm sure his wife laughed it off when jeralt told her all dramatically on their first date. she was the brains of the marriage!
The Eisners are... disasters. They’re just.... disasters. I bet Mama Eisner had the braincell, and when she died, the braincell didn’t transfer to either of them, so Byleth and Jeralt were left to be disasters by themselves.

notes: hi! it’s minato anon here but i stopped hiding to submit this little piece while i work on other ideas. this is mostly spoiler-free but if you finished the church route, some ideas will make a lot more sense. the premise includes ng+ byleth and what it means to learn new things every reset.
It’s an instant of a lifetime.
Byleth doesn’t realize it until the Divine Pulse starts on its accord. Time blurs together without a warning or an invitation except for the flow of space and colors, bringing him to the memory of a blood-stained cannon. He just knows the fallen bodies, the light of dawn over the mountains, the new age over all humanity. He tries to not overthink of the woman’s joy as she cradles the sword.
“But there’s more to this story than you already know,” a familiar voice mutters after. It’s suspiciously like Sothis. “I shall show you.”
“What do you mean?”
He doesn’t get an answer. As usual, Byleth never argues. He has grown used to the array of places until he’s brought to the beginning. He will wake up on his bed, his father’s voice a comfort for all he will repeat. Everything is moving in front of him until it suddenly stops.
The monastery is the same as always, untarnished and idyllic before the war had shown up like an unwanted suitor. People walk around, tucked in their world with chores and prayers, nothing new or different from his stay as a professor. A part of him is glad. He had grown to love the place like his first home, every day a new discovery for him.
He opens his mouth to ask what’s the reason for being brought here, stopping at the sight of someone. His blood runs cold, colder than the first time he had held his father’s body under the rain.
He had never known what his mother looked like, only that she had died shortly after he was born. Probably a blessing in disguise to never knew he could neither laugh nor cry. When he was little, he had tried to imagine what it would have been like if she had lived. Maybe nothing big or spectacular, like worry about his injuries, chastise his father for being reckless, and pull them together for a hug. A long, firm and tight hug, Byleth imagines. He will never be able to live anything like that and yet—
“Mother?” His voice is small. Impossibly small. “Mama?”
His throat hurts, it hurts, and it hurts. He’d lived like a corpse for a good part of his first life, and all his attempts of trying to get a better ending for all those he cared about, those he considered family, had been born from desperation. Not confidence but the opposite. Not knowing how to save everyone, not knowing if he should simply give up or if he was nothing but a fool.
He thinks about her grave, always adorned with flowers, her name forgotten from everyone’s memory. It had been different to stand in this place, in another time, when Byleth had felt nothing for a person he had never known.
It’s a sharp contrast to now.
Byleth stays silent, unable to trust himself to do anything but listen. They’re close, close enough to touch, but all he does is look at her. She’s talking to him. A lump of emotions wells up, heavy like crying, leaving him with a hole in his chest. He knows it will change nothing but before he knows it, he’s wrapping his arms around her, like a ghost who can never hold anything. The smell of clean laundry hits like a slap on the face.
But, for a second too long, he thinks—feels two arms wrap around him.
“It’s time to start again,” Sothis whispers like an apology.
A bit longer. Please, just a bit longer.
When Byleth wakes up, his cheeks are wet, his mother’s warmth still around him like an embrace.
