LaD.I.Y Fest
Saturday Zak and I went to this event called LaD.I.Y Fest that was being held at one of the Binnenpret squat. We went to a workshop called Femphobia. I shoulda known we were in trouble as soon as we entered the room. 100% white!!
Well we went in anyway. It was such a simplistic discussion of feminism. Absolutely NO analysis. They spent the entire time talking about whether shaving their legs was feminist or not and whether they would be taken more seriously with short hair rather than long hair. There was NO mention of intersectionality whatsoever. I really just cannot with these white, anarchist "feminists". In the moment, I was more amused than anything else. I didn't want to judge their movement and figured, hey, they are young and in the nascent stages of developing their ideology. But, ya, I've seen too much of that since I've been here to give it a pass, OVER IT.
OH and the best part: So Zak and I were the only people of color in the room and at the end one of the facilitators comes over and apologizes to us because in the beginning of the workshop she had shown some photos of what "normal" people look like (I'm guessing to demonstrate ideas of heteronormativity) and there wasn't a single photo of a "normal" Black person in the whole lot!
