Puerto Rico has a few bays that have bio-luminescent dinoflagellates in them (they often just refer to these as “biobays” for obvious reasons.

After sunset, we met up w our #biobay tour group. Loaded into a white van, our lead guide Carlitos went over safety & procedure for our #kayak adventure. We turn down a pitch black & incredibly bumpy road to end at a very busy launch area. "Shoes off & leave everything else behind." We are quickly outfitted w life jackets & paddles by young people wearing headlamps. Da Bunny & I have never kayaked together, so going out in a see thru boat visible only by its locater light surrounded by darkness both sky & water will either be magical or ridiculous. It was both! Our group made its way out to the middle of the bay. As our paddles contacted the water, there was a soft, ethereal blue glow from the bioluminescent dinoflagellates aka "dinos" half-plant, half-animal microorganisms. We stopped for a bit, anything disturbing the water like fish, stingrays or just splashing our hands in the water was just beautiful. Thankfully, the current pushed us back to shore. We could relax & ask questions about our experience on our way back. Know that cameras neither regular or cell phone can photograph the dinos.
