Stories of work this weekend.
So I work at an exotic bird store, and almost never leave without some cute stories of the various birds at work.
For those of you that don't know, Maggie is a military macaw at work who was put in a cage for 10 years and never touched by her previous owner. She is 13 years old, and needs a good amount of work because of it. She was brought into work as a consignment bird to be resold to a new home. At work, in the morning, when cleaning all the cages the consignment room is my domain, I love it too. I know they all need a little work and I don't mind that, and I feel bad for them so I try to spoil them as best I can and give them all some time while cleaning. When Maggie first arrived around September, she would lunge at the cage to try to bite me through it even if I so much as walked by. She has recently started to calm down just by seeing me more regularly and me giving her almonds through the bars and letting her taste my hand through the cage. I started to be able to pet her through the cage, then I could put my hand in the cage and pet her but not pick her up, and now when I open the cage the climbs out as fast as she can and hops onto my arm. I put her on a tree to hang out and check things out because I don't think anyone takes her out during the week because she won't let them. She is really warming up to me though, so on Sundays when I have lunch I bring her behind the counter and put her on my lap and she eats with me. So far she likes turkey sandwiches, and mash potatoes (although she is a little doofy about getting it off my fork. Customers think it's hilarious when I eat with her. My coworker swears I am going to take her, and I would if it weren't for my whole lack of room problem. I do really adore her though, she's such a sweet girl for all she's been through.
Then I had to help a customer so I put her on the stool and rang them up, and turn around to find my bosses bird digging into my mash-potatoes. -_- This is the bird that loves all women, except me, and always pulls my straws (and everyone elses) out of our drinks so we don't know whose is whose. He's an ass, but we have learned to love him some how.
Next, there were a bunch of tweens there (ewww) and they were in the way and irritating, but my boss's sons (who are tweens) were trying to flirt with the tween girls that were there, or at least show off. So I had a little conure on me because he likes to go in my shirt, and the one son had Rocket, a blue and gold, on him (Rocket and the conure are both "his" but Squishy the conure likes everyone and Rocket only likes a few). So he asked to trade me, which was fine except when Rocket hangs out on my shoulder he is so nosey. He sticks his head down my shirt and licks my neck and my face and my mouth and sticks his weirdo tongue in my ear every 5 seconds. It is adorable because he loves me so much, and everyone thinks it is hilarious but it also makes ringing people out difficult. Then he got really pissed when my boss came near me and put his wings up and got all defensive. Rocket is convinced I belong to him, so he gets all big and bad when people come near me. I love him, but he's like a jealous clingy bird boyfriend. Lol.
There was also a baby green wing that flew off his stand, and then ran over/hopped over to me making noises because he wanted attention and snuggling.
Last but not least a little dusky conure named Pepper that is boarding for a few days was out of his cage this morning when I went in the back. So I picked him up and let him go on my shoulder to hang out while I filled the water buckets... He climbed down my arm and started splashing around in the faucet and eventually found the big water bucket where I let him take a bath (with supervision of course in case he fell in). He was a drowned rat by the end but he seemed pretty pleased with himself.
