14. Wings of gold The thing about pretty wings, is that everyone else wants them and some won’t stop just because they’re attached to a person.

I wanna say no because I can imagine just how much more difficult baking would be without eggs but it would probably merit some philosophical debate. On the allergies bit I have friends with unusual allergies to common things so I have amusing stories involving offering them the thing and getting a very bland look in return. Or the 'oh look [insert name] poison' (Incuding but not limited to chocolate, apples, pineapples, almonds, grapefruit, and perfume)

Also on eggs. Eggs or live birth? Because even tiny wings could cause complications but so could carrying a big enough egg.

I like the thought that it’s merited philosophical debate but i can certainly see how it would be justified. 

Also i’ve experienced this, I have a dear friend who’s allergic to lavender which I frequently forget, so I’ll offer her drinks with lavender sometimes (my favorite coffee shop puts lavender in EVERYTHING) and she’ll just look at me, dead-eyed, like ‘seriously’

I think the idea of making saguru have a gluten allergy could be fun - also, I have a friend who (iirc) made saguru asthmatic in one of her fics.

I wonder how caffeine affects our avian humanoids, also? isn’t that super bad for birds? What about other things that humans can eat but birds can’t? Perhaps some people have evolved to have a resistance to that, while others haven’t? (kind of like how some of us have evolved to tolerate lactose but others haven’t?)

in terms of birth: god i don’t know. Both seem potentially difficult. Maybe some sort of softer egg, so that it can leave the birth canal more safely but it forms around the limbs so wings aren’t as likely to get in the way? but its membrane is thick enough that perhaps a doctor needs to cut into it, or something?

Heiji and Ran are probably some of the only people Conan tolerates carrying him around while flying. Those with tailfeathers wearing long in-the-way skirts probably have an easily removable clasps just incase they take a nosedive. Speaking of nosedives how many times do you think Conan accidentally tried to launch himself before going 'wait shit woops' (and no it's just me)

Oh yeah the clasps are a definite important thing for those unexpected times when you need to take off!!

and omg Conan is gonna give Ran a heart attack tbh, scaring her to death like that. I’m imagining him actually fucking up once or twice and someone needing to catch him. Conan stop frightening your caregivers.

I think there isnt anything against having the feather be out and obvious, plus it would certainly make for easy flight access. (Which also makes undershorts a necessity) Longer skirts are maybe less common as opposed to shorter skirts with leggings/pants under as they'd get in the way of flight. Shinichi reverting to fledgling status would add in the challenge of him going from 'I can fly where ever' to grounded-very literally.

Precious bbs. The peacocks make me wonder how it is to be trans, especially in a species where there's an obvious color difference between 'male' and 'female' like in cardinals or peacocks. How much would that suck?

Agreed on multiple fronts!! I like the various styles that come with clothes accomodating for tail feathers and I’m so glad at the possibility of skirts being more normalized. Saguru in a long skirt is precious.

And you totally read my mind! Right as I mentioned peacocks, I thought: being trans must suck. Like with some species it’s easier, but imagine being an mtf trans peahen or vice versa. That would be really frustrating. Imagine the trans positivity tho. “trans peahens be proud of your beautiful feathers” etc

It would still be so rough tho like. What an unpleasantly blatant tell, for those super concerned with societally-defined passing, and the dysphoria would be the worst.

Absolutely. I like to think that he keeps an ear to the ground-ha-for their crow 'friends' and maybe picks up a bit of training on flying with added weight (which definitely comes in handy if Kaito ever takes a hit to the wing). Another neat idea could be what would happen if he ever got close enough to his phantom to be comfortable just chilling with his wings out around him-or even detailing why he hates the phrase Pretty Bird. (Also imagine the bird boys nesting in blankets)

I suddenly wonder if flight is included in curriculum in schools? Like it must be, so I wonder if flighted kids are ever separated from flightless kids in physical education and stuff.

Also I really do love the idea of him becoming close enough to his phantom and sharing with him. I’m sure Kid would itch to know why his detective so often hides the wings. For a while it might be a point of contention, though somewhat lighthearted. “why would i answer any of your questions if you won’t answer mine” ends a lot of the earlier attempts at that conversation

I'm always here to subvert tropes, and imagine how much less he'd be taken seriously with the jeweled feathers. I could see a parrot easily, the intelligent long lived birds with bright colors. Maybe a scarlet or blue macaw or-to add insult to injury-the fluffy flightless Kakapo. Plus just imagine the market for shed feathers, or worse the black market for humans with gorgeous wings.

I was starting to look up colorful birds and found some pretty things, but somehow parrots never crossed my mind. That would be great! parrot saguru i love u son

It’s funny, I’ve considered a version of saguru where he somehow manages to own sparrowhawk Watson while also having himself a tricksy african grey that is kind of his best friend. the two birds don’t get along but it’s okay saguru works it out somehow

but! yes!! tbh i love the mental image of saguru with? scarlet macaw wings? like WOW (gay baby boy never stood a chance with those rainbow wings)

though with blue macaw wings that’d be great too goodness gracious kdjd

he’d be real salty if he had flightless wings tho. imagine having to pursue criminals. who can FLY. but meanwhile he has these ungainly things that just. exist. I’m sure he’s adapted somehow. 

any version of this is especially great bc many versions of my saguru are. afraid of heights because reasons.
