Idk about piano but I played percussion and my rule of thumb was to stop practicing whenever I felt my hands/wrists/arms start to ache bc I never wanted to hurt myself and make it harder to play later. That's just be dumb. But if I wanted or needed to practice more, I'd just take breaks and go back for another small practice session later

Percussion? Wow that's something. After watching Whiplash I have like 10x more respect for percussionists. For real.
