Bistro Moncur is a restaurant that I wanted to visit for a while now but never got around to.

The restaurant is smartly decorated, light, airy, stylish but simple. Both James and I really enjoyed the sweeping wooden ceiling/wall cladding and the Louis Poulsen PH5 lamps along the bar. It reminded me of an aeroplane hanger with its curved ceiling.

We were seated in the middle of the restaurant and did not feel crowded nor cramped.

Bistro Moncur have an impressive wine list. There were plenty available by the glass. We opted for a bottle of Man O War Sauvignon Blanc a New Zealand wine from Waiheke Island to share with our starters and ordered wine by the glass to go with our respective mains.

The highlight of the meal was the French Onion Souffle Gratin starter, chosen by Brad and Alicia, which was quite impressive and could have been a main meal on its own.

James’s starter was equally impressive. Smoked salmon with Pomello, it was a nice combination of sweet and sour and the fish looked very fresh. 

My scallops with cauliflower puree was a little bit disappointing. The scallops were cooked to perfection, however, it was overpowered by the cauliflower puree (in my opinion a dollop of puree under each scallop would have been sufficient).

There were a few different of opinions on the main dishes.

Prime fillet steak with béarnaise sauce was the winning dish of the day. Brad thought it was the one of the best steaks he ever had.

Alicia’s Barramundi was fresh and she was happy with it.

James and I had liver and onion, which was a tad dry and sinewy. Bistro Moncur made up for the livers with a beautiful apple crumble soufflé, which was light and delicious.

Although the staff were efficient, we felt the service was a bit cold and impersonal (they forgot Brad’s dessert order).

The Good Food Guide (GFG) review noted the consistent quality of the food served at Bistro Moncur (since 1993). The GFG gave this restaurant 1 Hat with a score of 15 out of 20.

From our experience, I think the GFG was right on the money, our average score was 15 out of 20. Although, it was a good experience, we would not return here again unless we were in the area and we might suggest other places first before recommending this restaurant.
